Twins die after brother jumps into Miami lake to save the other despite not knowing how to swim

MIAMI-DADE, FLORIDA: Tragedy struck in Miami on Friday afternoon, April 7, when two teenage twin brothers drowned in a lake at Arthur Woodard Park. One of the twins was pushed into the water by another teenager while they were playing near the lake, according to witnesses. The second twin dove to save his sibling, but both the boys were unable to swim and began to drown.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue responded to the scene of the drowning at the park located along the 1100 block of Northwest 99th Street and sent three divers to search for the missing boys. After locating them, paramedics performed CPR and rushed them to a nearby hospital. However, sadly one of the twins died at the hospital. The other twin was said to be critical, but later passed away.

Children were playing near the embankment when a child fell into the water 

“According to investigators, a group of children were playing near the embankment of the lake of this park when a teenager fell into the water,” Miami-Dade Police Department detective Luis Sierra said, as per WSVN. Jefferson, a Witness told CBS, "The brother jumped in to try to save his brother," adding, "He couldn't and both of them were drowning." Another child watching called 911, authorities said.

Another Horrified witness Miguel 'El Skipper' Quintero, who lives on the other side of the lake, watched divers search the lake for about an hour. He described the lake as being about 15 feet deep and stated, "You never want to see something like this ... that it is about as hard as it gets," he told NBC6.

Sierra, while expressing his condolences, said, "My heart goes out to their family. This is a very, very sad event when you have a group of children playing at a park on a beautiful day for this to happen." The identities and ages of the deceased boys have not been released as police are in the process of notifying their family members.

Florida has a high rate of unintentional drowning deaths per capita among children ages 0 to 17. According to the Centers for Disease Control, Florida ranked 6th in the US for this type of tragedy in 2022. So far, this year, there have already been 22 drownings in the state of Florida, and in 2022, the Florida Department of Children and Families reported a total of 93 drownings.

The incident has left the community in shock and mourning. The children, as per one witness cited by the outlet, have been left traumatized.
