Twitter’s LIT as Joe Biden gets FACT-CHECKED, kick-starting Elon Musk era

A recent tweet by President Joe Biden which apparently stated ‘facts and figures’ on the Inflation Reduction Act has come under public scrutiny

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX and now the de facto CEO of Twitter, declared his intention to establish a "content moderation council" at the social media platform after the $44 billion deal to take it private was finalized. Interestingly, a recent tweet by President Joe Biden was fact-checked by Twitter and it opened a floodgate of reactions on social media.

Before the council meets, he claims he won't make any "big content decisions" or unban any accounts that have already been suspended, according to CNBC. One of Musk's first actions was to remove a number of top employees, including the CEO Parag Agrawal and the CFO Ned Segal. Sean Edgett, general counsel for Twitter, and Vijaya Gadde, director of legal policy, trust, and safety at Twitter, were both fired.

There are significant challenges that Musk faces in trying to solve Twitter’s age-old problem with misinformation, fact-checking and bots. A recent tweet by President Joe Biden which apparently stated "facts and figures" on the Inflation Reduction Act has come under public scrutiny. Twitter, itself fact-checked Biden’s tweet and proceeded to provide added links for more reliable information. 

This opened a floodgate of reactions with many users of the platform having already jumped on the bandwagon. One went on to call out both Biden and Musk as two sides of the same coin. Further stating “Almost as if both sides have an agenda. I really doubt Elon is going to be 100% sincere when it comes to 'fact checking' Biden and crew.” Another said, “Yooooo these kinds of checks are gonna have all politicians shaking…” Another wrote, “Good. This guy always says random crap without context.” Another user went on to say "Ha. Perfect. Exactly what the doctor ordered…outside of euthanasia. Super ha. I wonder if 'more billions to Ukraine' posts will get fact checked with the nature of lend lease agreements? This is so very much needed." Another user said, "I'm left leaning, but I like information added as context. Provides a deeper view of a comment. This isn't saying it's 'misinformation', but adding more detail for the reader to discern their own opinion. Nice touch @elonmusk."

Musk stated in a statement that he, of course, shared on Twitter: "Fundamentally, Twitter strives to be the most respected advertising platform in the world that enhances your brand and grows your organization.” Musk’s vision of a "safe space" for public discourse has not yet taken shape, and if the billionaire is earnest in his dialogue is yet to be seen.
