Trump calls Medina Spirit ‘junky’ as Kentucky Derby-winning horse fails drug test: 'Whole world laughing at us'
Former president Donald Trump has decided to weigh in on Medina Spirit, the racehorse who tested over the legal limit for a drug at the Kentucky Derby. Following the news, trainer Bob Baffert had been suspended, and the results of the race invalidated. Trump has called the horse a 'junky' in his latest Tweet-like statement.
"So now even our Kentucky Derby winner, Medina Spirit, is a junky. This is emblematic of what is happening to our Country. The whole world is laughing at us as we go to hell on our Borders, our fake Presidential Election, and everywhere else!" Trump wrote on May 9. The post is one of the many he has published on his new 'Desk of Donald J. Trump' feed.

Trump set up the feed after Facebook upheld its ban. Besides his personal website feed, he currently has no other options to put out his thoughts on the Internet. The latest post is a classic example of Trump, using another news article to talk about himself and talking about the 2020 election results that he insists are fake. According to reports, Medina Spirit tested positive for 21 picograms of the anti-inflammatory drug betamethasone.
Ridden by jockey John Velazquez, the horse secured a half-length victory in the 19-horse Kentucky Derby on May 1. If the verdict is uphead, Medina Spirit will be the first horse since Dancer´s Image to be disqualified for medication after winning a derby. Dancer's Image was disqualified in 1968. The controversy has shocked the racing world, as trainer Baffert has claimed he was unsure how Medina Spirit tested positive. In 2020, Baffert was fined $1,500 after another of his horses, Gamine, tested positive for the same drug at the Kentucky Oaks last September.
It is unclear why Trump chose to weigh in on the controversy in particular, but this is not his first time weighing in on the Kentucky Derby. Back in 2019, he tweeted, "The Kentuky Derby decision was not a good one. It was a rough and tumble race on a wet and sloppy track, actually, a beautiful thing to watch. Only in these days of political correctness could such an overturn occur. The best horse did NOT win the Kentucky Derby - not even close!" That was following the controversial decision to award the race to Country House after it was ruled that favorite Maximum Security had bumped into another horse.
Plenty of users enjoyed making fun of Trump when he posted that comment, and the trolls were back to make fun of his latest statement.

One user asked, "Is he ... is he aware that Medina Spirit is a horse?" Another noted, "Trump called Medina Spirit a "junky." On top of the spelling, the indication is the horse had an individual role or choice in this. Both are wrong"

Over the last several years, there has been increased scrutiny on horse racing due to multiple allegations of substance abuse. Baffert himself has been investigated several times in the past for repeatedly having his horses fail drug tests. In fact, the condition was so bad Congress passed, and Trump signed the federal Horseracing Integrity and Safety Act in 2020. The law goes into effect in July 2022, and creates a national standard for rules and regulations in regards to drug testing.
