Rapper Tray Savage of Chief Keef's Glo Gang shot dead at age 26, fans mourn and say 'Da Glo lost another one'
Tray Savage has been killed after being shot multiple times while he was driving. The 26-Year-Old Chicago rapper, whose real name is Kentray Young, was reportedly dropping his girlfriend off on the South Evans Avenue in the Chatham neighborhood, the same neighborhood where Young also lived when he was shot twice, once in the neck and once in the shoulder, while driving on Friday morning at 11 am local time.
Following the shooting the rapper continued driving, hitting three parked cars, before coming to a halt. Witnesses who were at the scene of the shooting claimed to have seen a white SUV speeding away from the site. Following the shooting, Young was rushed to the University of Chicago Medical Center, but sadly, succumbed to his injuries.
The Chicago Police Department confirmed that a fatal shooting of a 26-year-old male on the South Side of Chicago did occur, but did not confirm the identity of the victim. Young's death is being treated as a homicide and investigations are underway. No suspects have been taken into custody as of yet. Prior to his tragic passing, Young was signed to Chief Keef's label Glo Gang. One of the original members of Glo Gang, Young was known for tracks like 'Got the Mac', 'Faces' and 2013's 'Chiefin Keef' with Chief Keef. His most recent project was 2019's 'Mhgs'.
The rapper and producer was believed to be a member of the Chicago-based Black Disciples street gang, an organization created with the goal of fighting against civil rights injustices as well as bullying from caucasian gangs. Unfortunately, members of the gang have been involved in various crimes including murder, robbery, and kidnapping, and gained notoriety following the murder of Black Disciples member 11-year-old Robert "Yummy" Sandifer in 1994 following his accidental shooting of 14-year-old pedestrian Shavon Dean. Brothers Derrick Hardaway and Cragg Hardaway were eventually convicted of murder and the incident soon painted the gang in a highly negative light, regardless of their original intentions.
Young's more recent social media posts indicate he was deeply impacted by the current Black Lives Matter protests. In one of his last Instagram posts, he shared an image of a police car badly damaged by riots, stating, "#MrFloyd they treat us by color not by name. I been living in Chicago my whole life it’s always been police brutality on African Americans I don’t condone this but they gotta hear us or feel somehow some way."
Young, sadly, was no stranger to violence in his hometown, nor at his label: he is the third member of Glo Gang to lose his life to gun violence, following Mario "Blood Money" Hess in 2014 and Marvin "Capo" Carr in 2015.
Following his passing, Young's manager Idris Dykes said in an interview with HollywoodLife, "Trey Savage was one of the early members of GBE and original members of Glo Gang. Great spirited and always looking for a positive outcome. Was in the process of creating a new album." He also added that Young "was a great brother to Keef and the rest of us and dedicated father to his kids and will truly be missed."
Fans of the rapper are still in shock from the news, with some tweeting, "Wtf tray savage no way" and others stating, "Damn they got Tray Savage." Others pointed out how dangerous the streets are for young rappers, with so many passing away from gun violence at a young age. One fan shared, "Rip Tray Savage and All the guys that keep dying in the hood." Rapper Lil Durk tweeted, "These streets cold-blooded rest up savage," to which one fan responded, "Glo in peace tray savage." And a few fans lamented the loss of yet another Glo Gang artiste, tweeting, "Da Glo lost another one. Rip tray savage."
