How did Tor Eckhoff die? YouTuber dies 5 days after posting ‘I am not dead’ video
Five days ago popular Norwegian YouTuber, Tor Eckhoff, uploaded a video for his birthday with the teasing title, 'I am Not Dead, I am 57 today.' He then died while filming another video, according to Norwegian newspaper Verdens Gang.
Eckhoff, who has over one million subscribers, was also known as "Apetor." He reportedly fell through the ice at Jakobs Dam in Kongsberg, Norway. Only one eyewitness saw him falling and he reportedly called the authorities who pulled him from the water, but it was too late. In talks with the Norwegian newspaper, Eckhoff’s partner Tove Skjerven shared, “We miss him terribly much... it is a loss that will never let go. He has been everything to me and to our son.” Some of the other social media personalities who have died recently include Samantha Rabinowitz, Kim Kyeong-Bo, Antwain Fowler and Bashurverse.

Skjerven also took to Facebook to announce the YouTuber’s sad demise. An English translation of his post read, “My dearest Tor. Friday the 26th. November was just a regular Friday. You went to a water near Kongsberg, and you looked forward to skating. You should also film a little, which you should use in a video on YouTube. You messaged me when you arrived, with pictures of yourself and the water."
He added, "Nice relationship, you wrote. But something went horribly wrong. You ended up in the ice water, and this time you didn’t get back up, like you did so many times before! In the end, you were picked up by divers and sent by air ambulance to Ullevål hospital. They did everything they could to bring you back to life, but you had been underwater for too long. On Saturday night John and I were with you when the doctors in the hospital turned off all the machines that kept your body going.”
Who was Tor Eckhoff?
Eckhoff was often known for his videos capturing wild stunts in the Scandinavian snow. In 2016, he spoke with the Daily Dot about how he would chug vodka, skate on thin ice, and take 'Polar Bear' swims. “When you are ice swimming or messing around almost naked in the snow, you have a limited amount of time before you get too cold. During that time you just have to handle the cold mentally,” he said.
Eckhoff made it a birthday tradition to make 'I am Not Dead' videos. In his last 'I am Not Dead' video, he had the number '57’ written on his head as took several shots of vodka. Many fans commented on the irony of the caption of his last video, which had over 1 million views in the YouTube comments section. “The fact that he died 5 days after saying he’s alive gives me goosebumps… R.I.P,” Mia Martine commented. “Makes me cry,” a user named Odo added. “He died doing what he loved, producing his wacky and nonsensical videos that never fail to put a smile on one’s face,” wrote NymN, a YouTuber and Twitch streamer. “Gone but never forgotten!”
