1. JG Melon

This 1972 institution on the Upper East Side is a model for bar food. Although the turkey club and chef's salad are excellent, the burgers, which appear enticingly in the pass-through of the semi-open kitchen, draw the most attention. Fresh ground beef is used to make the patty, which is delivered with a flat top that is deeply seared yet still pink and juicy. Cottage fries with ripples are the traditional side dish.

2. White Mana Diner

This location, which has been in Jersey City since 1946, resembles a spaceship that crashed long ago by a collection of overpasses on a major thoroughfare. The structure had its humble beginnings as a sideshow during the Flushing, Queens, World's Fair in 1936. These days, it serves traditional sliders with cheese and pickles that are small enough to be consumed at its curved Formica counter two or three at a time. Previously open around the clock, it is now open from 8 am to 11 pm.

3. S&P

When the Court Street Grocers acquired the former Eisenberg's, many people feared that it wouldn't be as excellent. It is, after all, including the burger. It has been restored to look like a vintage burger, with a little patty, American cheese, raw onions, simple dill pickles, and most significantly, copious amounts of mustard.

4. 7th Street Burger

Smash burgers are currently very popular in New York City. The front-runner is 7th Street Burger, an East Village burger joint with just an ordering counter and a few patio tables. Simple, smashed patties are oozing with sauce from their Martin's Potato Roll buns and are simultaneously buttery, burnt, and cheesy. The juicy burgers here may make up a whole dinner despite being small enough to fit in one's hand.

5. Nowon

This simple burger was first served in the now-defunct East Village pub Black Emperor, but it is still available at chef Jae Lee's Korean-American eatery Nowon. The cheeseburger, which consists of a combination of chuck and short rib on a sesame bun with American cheese, kimchi mayo, and a large pickle impaled on top, was praised for its simplicity by Eater critic Ryan Sutton.
