Tom Holland's 'mistake' on Marvel set sparked brilliant ad-lib opportunity for Robert Downey Jr: 'You’re supposed to move now'
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: The promising psychological thriller 'The Crowded Room', based on the 1981 book 'The Minds of Billy Milligan' and inspired by a true tale, has its first three episodes out now on Apple TV+. Tom Holland, who is popularly known for playing Spiderman in the Marvel cinematic universe, plays the main protagonist in the series and the young Brit can be seen playing a serious character after quite a long time.
The 27-year-old has already proven himself to be one of the most promising upcoming stars in Hollywood, with all credit to his sublime acting. However, things do not always work out according to plan on the day of shooting. Actors sometimes have to offer their personal touch to the characters as not every scene can be performed as per the writers’ guidelines. Actors often improvise during shooting scenes and it can only work properly when there is a proper chemistry between the performers. And to the surprise of many, this is exactly what happened between Tom Holland and his fellow co-star Robert Downey Jr in their first Marvel movie together.
What happened in the first meeting between Peter Parker and Tony Stark?
Marvel fans are already aware of the fact that Holland and Downey Jr perfectly complement each other's characters, starting from their first scenes in 'Captain America: Civil War' when Peter Parker was recruited into Team Iron Man. The first meeting between Peter Parker and Tony Stark in the movie is a big fan favorite, mainly due to the exceptional character work. However, the most memorable moment in the scene or possibly in the movie would not have been possible if Holland did not forget to leave some space for Downey Jr to sit as they conversed in Parker’s bedroom.
Peter forgot to move and blocked Tony
As Stark goes to sit on the bed, Peter forgets to move and blocks Tony. “I’m gonna sit here, so you move the leg", Downey Jr reacts according to Cheatsheet. “Tom forgot the blocking of the scene, and of course, that’s Robert staying in character telling him, ‘You’re supposed to move now so I can sit on the bed,'” Marvel Studios News cites director Anthony Russo commented about the piece of improvisation. “Not only does he use it, but he uses it in a way that’s really entertaining and fun. That’s such a dexterous and inventive move on an actor’s part.”
Are Tom Holland and Robert Downey Jr friends?
Holland and Downey Jr are not only friends on screen but off screen as well. The 'Sherlock Holmes' actor first came across the 28-year-old during the latter's audition for Civil War. Despite Holland's anxiety at that time, Robert Downey saw the young actor's potential and took him aside. “I remember the feeling,” Downey stated. “I’ve been through this before, and it is incredibly stressful. Enjoy the process and let your body take over.” Downey posted a throwback on Instagram of the two in 2019, captioning it, “Love you kid.” Holland responded, “The love is real boss man.”
