While we have had Hollywood celebrities hilariously adapting to the fan service in South Korea while promoting their films, no one was ready for one of the biggest action movie stars to do aegyo on the red carpet. On June 19, Tom Cruise went viral on K-pop Twitter for doing aegyo while attending the Korean premiere of his latest film ‘Top Gun: Maverick’. We even had the Korean paparazzi ‘Dispatch’ creating a TikTok edit of Cruise doing finger hearts and other popular K-pop poses to fans.

One of the most common fan service acts that fans love and hate is aegyo. Originating from babies doing cute movements, it has been adapted by the Korean entertainment industry for celebrities to show off their charms. This includes talking in a baby voice or doing cute movements like making hearts with their hands or peace signs. And while some K-pop fans find it cringy when grown men are asked to do it, it did not stop reporters from asking Tom Cruise to show off his aegyo as well. The ‘Top Gun’ star along with his co-stars like Miles Teller, Greg Tarzan Davis and Glen Powell were asked to make multiple hearts at the premiere.

Tom Cruise does aegyo

From the face heart to the usual finger heart, Tom Cruise complied. He also ended up doing the currently trendy ‘gyaru’ sign which is the upside down peace sign. The video has now amassed a whopping 2.5 million views as even locals have found it. Fans made hilarious memes and edits of the clip and ended up making the phrase ‘aegyo’ trend on Twitter worldwide. One K-pop fan tweeted, “I DIDNT KNOW WHAT I EXPECTED WHEN I SAW "AEGYO" TRENDING.. but it certainly wasn't that.”

'This is NCT Hollywood practicing aegyo'

The same thing applies for kpop idols. They're not children.” One fan joked, “Never knew I’ll get a chance to see this aegyo Tom Cruise sunbaenim in this lifetime.” Another added, “Dispatch posting a tik tok of tom cruise showing his aegyo??$;;$;&.”
