The Weeknd's tweet gets 'After Hours' trending months after release, excited fans want 'King of the Fall' live
We might be cursing 2020 for the current situation and calling it the worst year, there are still some things to be positive about, especially for The Weeknd fans. According to a Rolling Stones article, The Weeknd’s (born Abel Makkonen Tesfaye) ‘After Hours’ is the biggest album of the first half of 2020, topping Alpha Data’s mid-year ranking with 1.3 million album units in the US. And then, the musician’s one tweet made the album trend on Twitter.
He tweeted, “You already know next time gonna be bigger... what songs off After Hours did you guys wanna hear live?” And, what followed next was a barrage of replies from his fans. From ‘Until I bleed out’ to ‘King of the Fall’ and, of course ‘After Hours’. Looking at the response, the favorite seems to be ‘King of the Fall’. One user wrote, “I’ll sell my organs to listen to king of the fall live.” Some requested him to put that song back on Spotify. A fan requested, “@theweeknd can ‘King Of The Fall’ come back on Spotify? Please.”
What’s even more interesting is that, with just one tweet, not only did ‘After Hours’ began trending, his other hits such as ‘Hardest To Love’, ‘Scared To Live’ and ‘Snowchild’, among others began trending. Some fans even demanded that he should do a live performance. A user tweeted, “Imma start a petition to get you to do a live performance online.” Another fan requested him to do an Instagram live. A fan tweeted, "@theweeknd can we get a stand alone track out of your genius mind since we don’t get a live performance, King!?" While another expressed, "The day i see a live performance of king of the fall by the weeknd i can rest easy".
He had dropped the ‘After Hours’ album in March this year. As reviewed earlier on this website, 'After Hours' presents an ethereal escape with airy, otherworldly songs that are rather gentle at their emotional core. A Rolling Stone story, quotes the artist saying, “Let the music heal us all during these dark times.” The artwork of the promotional material of the album also created a lot of buzz. The album cover features a bloody-nosed The Weeknd, donning a red suit. The visuals of the album and promotional content are said to be inspired by movies such as 'Joker', 'Casino', and 'Uncut Gems', with the last film having a cameo appearance by the musician himself. In an interview to Variety magazine, he said, “Especially in the “After Hours” video, I went full-on film geek: There’s the “Chinatown” reference with the broken nose, the “Jacob's Ladder” reference with the subway, “King of Comedy” for Jimmy Kimmel, “Trouble Every Day,” “Possession,” “Dressed to Kill” with the elevator — and of course “After Hours,” Martin Scorsese’s [1985] film, is the obvious inspiration, with all this madness taking place in one night. That was the only on the nose reference — pun intended!”
‘After Hours’ follows the Weeknd’s previously released LP singles ‘Heartless’ and ‘Blinding Lights.’
