The Weeknd still not over Selena Gomez? Singer registers new single called 'Like Selena'
The Weeknd took to his Instagram on Monday, November 25, to tease his upcoming album. The 29-year-old left many fans confused as he shared a blurry picture to his social media account with the caption, "The fall starts tomorrow night." Later he took to Instagram Stories to post the same black-and-white out of focus shot, writing, "Tomorrow night we start again."
Although the rapper did not seem keen on sharing any further details about the kind of music he was working on for his new album, according to ASCAP, he has registered an upcoming song titled 'Like Selena' to a U.S. public performance organization. The song - from its title - seems to be a tribute to Weeknd's nine-month-old relationship with 27-year-old Selena Gomez.
The pair dated between January and October 2017. They made their relationship Instagram official back in April 2017 after they were seen attending the Coachella Music Festival together.
"I really am [happy]. It's great. I don't depend on one area of my life to make me happy," she said at that time during an interview with InStyle. "It's really important for me to love and nourish my friends and family, and to make sure that I never get influenced by a guy. I've wanted to be in a strong headspace for years, and I really wasn't. Before, I was so young and easily influenced, and I'd feel insecure."
"You want someone to add to your life, not to complete you, if that makes sense," she added about the new man in her life. "I'm lucky because he's more of a best friend than anything else."
However, they called off their relationship just months after that. In March 2018, The Weekend opened up about the split while releasing the album, 'My Dear Melancholy.'
"You want to get it out. It's like you close a chapter," he said during an interview with Time Magazine. "[But] I don't want to open that Pandora's box, talking about relationships. Prior to Melancholy, I had a whole album written, done, which wasn't melancholy at all because it was a different time in my life."
At the time many fans noticed that the album had a bunch of references to Selena in songs like 'Call Out My Name' and 'Starboy.'
