Spoilers for 'The Walking Dead: World Beyond' Season 2 Episode 2 'Foothold'

Season 2 of AMC's limited 'The Walking Dead: World Beyond' series was supposed to wrap up unexplained plotlines while also giving an in-depth insight into the reason behind the apocalypse. CRM — part nefarious, part brilliant, and part confusing gets some major screentime in 'FootHold'. After the first episode saw Iris and Hope choosing their own paths, the second chapter deals with the motives the CRM has and the reactions it sparks from the key characters.

Watching Silas (Hal Cumpston) return to the series makes things refreshing as well. However, this one's all about the mysterious organization. In the pilot season, the slick, sadistic, and ruthlessly efficient unit led by Elizabeth (Julia Ormond) was looked at as the vital component of the show and the spin-off has made sure it has its eye on the ball as the focus seldom wavers.

'The Walking Dead: World Beyond' Episode 1: Here's why central character Rick Grimes won't appear in the series

CRM's goal is pretty interesting. Although Hope doesn't fully buy the mission, there is no changing the fact that she is intrigued by what her father has achieved and his immense desire to save humanity. Leopold Bennett (Joe Holt) on his part, loves both his daughters and tries to convince Julia Ormond's Elizabeth to get Iris in as well. The motive is simple: Find a cure. However, as noble and need of the hour the task may seem, it is still puzzling to see their need to kill innocents.

The research is still an ongoing process and the end of the season may not necessarily provide a solid answer about what causes the dead to become empties. From viral, bacterial, and fungal, there are a string of theories that make sense but aren't concrete. In addition to figuring the cure, CRM also intends to accelerate the decay of the ones who already turned and essentially wipe them out on a mass scale. The show finally acknowledged that the dead’s decomposition has considerably slowed, making them stay animated longer. They want to “turn off the triggers” and eliminate the empties.

Silas has had quite the journey himself. He's helping clear structures for expansion in the days to come and he also understands the deeper meaning of what the intentions are as he sees mass culling by military personnel. The idea is to gain a massive foothold by clearing the horde of zombies.

'Foothold' makes some important strides in franchise history. 'World Beyond' makes things interesting as far as the direction of the series is heading. And while at it, we can't wait for Elton to join in.

'The Walking Dead: World Beyond' Season 2 airs Sunday nights on AMC.
