Spoilers for 'The Walking Dead: World Beyond' finale

With season 1 of what has been an average affair, 'World Beyond' comes to an end but promises a grittier and darker season 2. With a rating of 41% on Rotten Tomatoes, the AMC spin-off has toggled between good, bad, and decent episodes and is all set to end with season 2. This means there's quite a bit of explaining to do after how season 1 ended with the characters being split up and tossed about. Felix and Iris are stranded at one end, while Elton and Percy are at a different location.

Huck and Hope leave with Elizabeth with the latter being termed as 'the asset'. The series doesn't necessarily end with a cliffhanger but leaves a lot of story threads unanswered. However, there is a season 2 in the works and that may bring a definitive conclusion to the show. Here's everything we know so far:

Release date

While the series has been greenlit for another season already, the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic means a significant delay in the show's return. We reckon a mid-2021 date might work, as the production for the show is slowly getting underway. Watch this space as we keep you posted on the release date.

Plot

Season 2 will pretty much delve into CRM's motives as they took center stage in the last three episodes of Season 1. Showrunner Matt Negrete spoke to Entertainment Weekly about how they decided to end the series after the second installment. "We're going to go for two seasons. It's going to be 20 episodes in total. It's challenging because there's a lot we need to fit in those 20 episodes. But, at the same time, it's great to approach it knowing what you're working towards," he said.

Fans will hope that Rick Grimes will somehow make his way into the season as the series is believed to lead into the character's standalone movies. The installment will also see the sisters, Hope and Iris (Alexa Mansour) and Aliyah Royale) reunite with their father, Leopold Bennett (Joe Holt). There will be some attention paid to Julia Ormond's Lt. Elizabeth Kublek and her relationship with her daughter, Huck aka Jennifer (Annet Mahendru).

It will also be interesting to see how Silas' (Hal Cumpston) and Elton's (Nicolas Cantu) journey pans out. They have had detailed background explanations and their relationships with Iris and Hope will be possibly explained as well.

Cast

A still from 'The Walking Dead: World Beyond' (IMDb)

Expect much of the cast to return to Season 2.  Aliyah Royale as Iris Bennett, Alexa Mansour as Hope Bennett, Hal Cumpston as Silas Plaskett, Nicolas Cantu as Elton Ortiz, Nico Tortorella as Felix Carlucci, Annet Mahendru as Jennifer "Huck" Mallick, Julia Ormond as Elizabeth Kublek will reprise their roles in the upcoming installment. We're keen to see how Holt's Leo and Natalie Gold's Dr. Lyla Bellshaw's storyline plays out.

Writer/Director

Matt Negrete will return as the showrunner along with Scott M. Gimple, Robert Kirkman, Gale Anne Hurd, David Alpert, and Brian Bockrath most likely to return as the producers.
