‘The View’ sees Whoopi Goldberg dismiss outrage over Lizzo's thong, says at Lakers games people wear 'less clothing than players'

Co-host Meghan McCain seemed to agree with Goldberg and said, “I just think she was probably having fun at a Lakers game and of all the things going on in the country -- this was number one on Twitter yesterday -- is this really… Let her live”

American singer, rapper and songwriter Lizzo has created some controversy. On Sunday evening, at a match between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Minnesota Timberwolves at the Staples Center, Los Angeles, the Lakers’ female dancers performed a routine to Lizzo’s hit song ‘Juice’ during a break in the game.

This prompted Lizzo, who was present at the game, to dance along. While dancing, the 31-year-old musician turned around, revealing a cut-out section at the back of her dress that showed her underwear. Following that, she received both adulation and derogatory comments about her outfit.

A lot of the latter were fatphobic in nature. On Tuesday’s episode of ABC’s ‘The View’, co-hosts Whoopi Goldberg, Abby Huntsman, Joy Behar, Sunny Hostin and Meghan McCain discussed the Twitter storm that followed Lizzo’s outfit choice.

Goldberg dismissed the outrage saying, “I used to go to Lakers games all the time. When you’re out, especially in L.A., especially at a home game, folks are wearing less clothing than the players are.”

She added, “So I think Lizzo does what she always does. She dresses -- she is who she is. Some people are uncomfortable with it. Some people say no. But Laker girls are dancing, legs are up, things are happening, people are doing their whole thing and bouncing. And you know, it’s all about basketball really.”

Behar responded to Goldberg and said, “At first I saw it, I thought, ‘That’s really inappropriate’. But now that you’ve convinced me, I think I am going to wear [Lizzo’s outfit] to the wedding I’m going on Friday night.”

Hostin added to the conversation, talking about Lizzo’s style and brand. She said, “This is her shtick and we know about Lizzo -- she’s a provocateur. For me, I don’t care about the argument that kids are watching. But for me, she is this big accomplished musician. She is a star… I just don’t think she really needs it,” to which Goldberg said, “It doesn’t matter what you think she needs. That’s what she says she needs.”

McCain summed up the controversy best when she said, “I just think she was probably having fun at a Lakers game and of all the things going on in the country -- this was number one on Twitter yesterday -- is this really… Let her live.”

'The View' airs every day at 2 p.m. ET on ABC.
