'The Sandman' on Netflix: Date, plot, cast and latest buzz around Neil Gaiman's fantasy series

As far as ‘The Sandman’ is concerned, the project has been in development since the late ‘90s, but it could never be materialized. In 2019, Netflix picked up the show and started working on it. Three years later, the streaming platform released the first official trailer for the upcoming fantasy series and also shared the release date for the aforementioned title.
Although this is not the first time a Neil Gaiman book series is being adapted for the silver screen, ‘The Sandman’ might just prove to be one of his most important yet. Here’s everything you need to know about the upcoming series.
When does ‘The Sandman’ release and where can you watch it?

What is ‘The Sandman’ all about?
The official synopsis reads, “A rich blend of modern myth and dark fantasy in which contemporary fiction, historical drama, and legend are seamlessly interwoven, The Sandman follows the people and places affected by Morpheus, the Dream King, as he mends the cosmic — and human — mistakes he's made during his vast existence.”
The series will primarily focus on Dream, one of the most powerful beings known as the Endless, who has been captured by an occultist named Roderick Burgess and is held captive for over 70 years. The absence of Dream wreaks havoc across the globe and when he finally manages to break out, he realizes that he would have to take a long journey to set everything in order and fight evil spirits to correct his past mistakes.
Also, the author himself had previously announced that the first season of the Netflix series will consist of 10 episodes and revolve around ‘Preludes and Nocturnes’ and ‘The Doll’s House’.
Who stars in the upcoming fantasy series?
The cast of ‘Sandman’ is filled with a talented pool of actors led by Tom Sturridge who is playing the role of Dream in the series. On the other hand, Jenna Coleman will be seen portraying the character of Johanna Constantine and Kirby Howell-Baptists will play Death.
Tom Sturridge
One of the prominent theatre artists in the world, Sturridge has been a force to be reckoned with when it comes to stage acting. He began his acting career at the tender age of 11 with the 1996 television adaptation of ‘Gulliver’s Travels’. Sturridge continued acting across all formats in the early 2000s and made a name for himself. In 2013, the actor mesmerized everyone with his skills in ‘Orphans’, for which he received his first-ever Tony Award nomination. Since then, he has given award-worthy performances in theatre productions such as ‘American Buffalo’, ‘The Trial’, ‘1984’, and ‘Sea Wall/A Life’.
Sturridge can currently be seen in the HBO series ‘Irma Vep’ opposite Alicia Vikander and Adria Arjona.
Other actors to feature in ‘The Sandman’ include David Thewlis (John Dee), Gwendoline Christie (Lucifer), Vivienne Acheampong (Lucienne), Boyd Holbrook (The Corinthian), Charles Dance (Roderick Burgess), Asim Chaudhary (Abel), and Sanjeev Bhaskar (Cain).
Showrunners
Based on the graphic novel series by Neil Gaiman, Sam Kieth, and Mike Dringenberg, the show has been developed for television by David S. Goyer and Allan Heinberg.
Gaiman, Goyer, and Heinberg also serve as executive producers on the show.
