HBO's 'Neighbors' gets exciting update on future ahead of Season 1 finale as VP opens up: 'Season 2 can't...'
Expect to see more property-line disputes and petty squabbles as HBO has renewed the docu-series 'Neighbors' for Season 2. Directed by Harrison Fishman and Dylan Redford, the unscripted show features real-life neighbors engaging in chaotic conflicts and complicated disputes. The six-part series premiered on HBO on February 13 and received mixed reviews. But audiences slowly warmed to the series, as the streamer shared that the first five episodes averaged 2.9 million views per episode across platforms. The renewal news arrives a day before the finale, which airs on Friday.
Nina Rosenstein, the executive VP of programming, late night and specials at HBO, highlighted the show's universal appeal by saying, "Everyone has a neighbor story, and Dylan and Harrison have a knack for finding ones that make you laugh, cringe, and make it impossible to look away. At a time when even the smallest disagreements can spiral out of control, Neighbors feels both hilariously absurd and surprisingly relatable. What makes the show special isn’t just the stories and people they find, but the empathy and humanity they bring to each episode. Season 2 can’t come soon enough."
The first season features plenty of wild neighborly disputes over Halloween decorations, property lines, and stray cats. Darrell, a retiree, fights with his neighbor, Trever, over his decision to raise livestock; former friends Victoria and Melissa engage in a grass-related dispute in Florida; Seth and Josh squabble over a fence in rural Montana; and former Texas senator Jeff Wentworth becomes annoyed with his neighbor, Alexa, over her 8-foot-high concrete wall. In the finale, the 73-year-old San Diego native Danny Smiechowski earns the ire of his neighbors for wearing a tiny yellow mankini while riding his exercise bike. He decides to move to a more like-minded community in Pasco County, Florida.
Redford and Fishman thanked HBO and the neighbors for allowing them to share their stories in a press release. "We’re incredibly grateful for the opportunity to work with the amazing teams at HBO, A24, Central, Gummy Films, and Genma Pictures on another season of Neighbors. They placed so much trust in us and gave us the freedom to create the show we always envisioned. Thank you to all the incredible neighbors who bravely shared their stories and welcomed us into their lives to make the first season possible, the duo said. They ended the statement by promising to return bigger and better in the show's next instalment, "We can’t wait to get back out in the field and introduce audiences to the Neighbors they never knew they had."
Ronald Bronstein and Josh Safdie, who co-wrote the Oscar-nominated film 'Marty Supreme,' serve as executive producers along with Fishman, Redford, Eli Bush, and JP Lopez Ali. Furthermore, Rachel Walden produces the series for Gummy Films. Fans can catch up on all the funny, bizarre, and downright hysterical moments from Season 1 of 'Neighbors' only on HBO.
