LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: ABC has announced the renewal of another fan-favorite show, 'The Good Doctor,' for a seventh season. The news comes after the recent renewals of hit series 'Grey's Anatomy' and 'The Rookie.' The sixth season of 'The Good Doctor' is nearing its end, but the medical drama remains a staple of Monday night programming on ABC, so the renewal is not surprising.

Since its debut in 2017, 'The Good Doctor' has followed the story of Dr Shaun Murphy, a brilliant young surgeon with autism and savant syndrome, as he works at San Jose St Bonaventure Hospital. Despite facing numerous difficulties, he forges meaningful relationships with his colleagues, falls in love, and even gets married. The series also features a talented cast including Freddie Highmore, Hill Harper, Richard Schiff, Fiona Gubelmann, Will Yun Lee, Christina Chang, Paige Spara, Bria Samone Henderson, and Noah Galvin. Based on a Korean drama of the same name, the critically acclaimed 'The Good Doctor' is produced by Sony Pictures Television and ABC Signature, and has become a rating juggernaut for ABC.

How popular is ABC's 'The Good Doctor'?

'The Good Doctor' continues to be one of the most-watched scripted shows on ABC, particularly when it comes to delayed and cross-platform viewing. In a notable achievement, the episode that aired on April 10 witnessed a 40 per cent increase in adults aged 18-49 viewership compared to the previous week's episode, matching its highest-rated telecast of the season. Furthermore, the show experienced a 3 per cent increase in total viewership week over week, garnering its most extensive audience since January 23.

With seven days of viewing on linear and digital platforms, the April 10 episode attracted an impressive multiplatform viewership of 7.9 million Total Viewers, marking its most-watched telecast since its season premiere in October 2022. After 35 days of viewing across linear and digital platforms, 'The Good Doctor' has drawn more than 9 million total viewers this season.

The show's success is also evident in its multiplatform ratings, as it registered nearly six times more viewership among Adults aged 18-49 compared to its initial Live+Same Day rating this season, rising by 478 per cent after 35 days of multiplatform viewing.

Will there be a 'The Good Doctor' spin-off?

'The Good Doctor' is a collaboration between Sony Pictures Television and ABC Signature, adapted from a Korean series. In the upcoming episode, tensions run high in the operating room, leading to a potential breaking point in the relationship between Dr Shaun Murphy (Highmore) and his father figure, Dr Aaron Glassman (Schiff). Meanwhile, Dr Morgan Reznick (Gubelmann) receives some much-needed support during her parental leave from Alex Park (Lee).

But the world of 'The Good Doctor' doesn't stop there. According to various reports, ABC is reportedly moving forward with a spinoff series called 'The Good Lawyer.' Episode 16 of the current season served as a backdoor pilot for the show, which features Felicity Huffman returning to television alongside Kennedy McMann and provides a glimpse into what the female-led arm of the 'Good Doctor' universe could look like.

The Season 6 finale of 'The Good Doctor' airs Monday, May 1 on ABC.
