LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Actor-comedian Russell Brand, who was previously married to singer Katy Perry, has recently been accused of rape, sexual assault and abuse.

Brand and Perry's relationship was short-lived. They met in 2009, got married in 2010, and divorced in 2011. However, Brand reportedly turned down a significant portion of Perry's fortune in their divorce settlement, despite being legally entitled to it.

Russell Brand and Katy Perry's relationship timeline

Russell Brand and Katy Perry first met in 2009 while filming a cameo appearance for the movie 'Get Him to The Greek' and began dating soon after.

Their relationship became public when they attended the MTV Video Music Awards together in September of the same year.

Brand proposed to Perry in 2010 during a romantic trip to India. The couple had a grand and traditional Indian wedding ceremony in Rajasthan, India in October 2010.

In December 2011, just over a year after their wedding, Brand filed for divorce from Perry citing irreconcilable differences.

Their divorce was finalized in July 2012.

Following their divorce, both Brand and Perry moved on to other relationships and continued with their respective careers in entertainment. Their whirlwind romance and subsequent divorce garnered significant media attention during that period.

Did Katy Perry and Russell Brand have a prenup?

Katy Perry and Russell Brand did not have a prenuptial agreement in place before their 2010 marriage.

In the absence of a prenup, California law generally considers assets acquired during a marriage to be community property, which means they would typically be subject to division in the event of a divorce.

This would have included a portion of Perry's earnings during their marriage, which were reported to be substantial. However, as mentioned earlier, Brand chose not to pursue a significant share of Perry's earnings in their divorce settlement, despite being legally entitled to it.

Why did Russell Brand turn down his divorce payout from Katy Perry?

According to reports from the Daily Mail at the time, Brand did not want Perry's money and even informed her that he had no intention of taking anything from her. He just wanted a quiet and amicable separation instead.

The divorce process in their state included a six-month waiting period before it was finalized, during which there was ample time for reconsideration. However, sources close to Brand suggested that he was genuinely moving on and had no interest in pursuing any portion of Perry's wealth.

Russell Brand's own net worth is estimated to be around $20 million now (2023), according to Coopwb, which could have contributed to his decision not to seek a share of Perry's assets.
