'The Bold Type' is Freeform's highly celebrated show. Following the lives of a millennial trio living in New York, the show explores the issues of women including career trajectories and romantic relationships. With the fourth season just wound up (having cut from 18 to 16 episodes following the shutdown of production due to the Covid-19 pandemic), a lot of the stories feel incomplete. We hope that it returns with a better plotline in the upcoming season. But with no official confirmation yet, we can only wait.

Here is everything you need to know about Season 5 of 'The Bold Type'.

Release date

So far, there is no official confirmation about the upcoming season. We will update this article once the info is made available.

Plot

'The Bold Type' is set in a Cosmopolitan-type magazine, Scarlet Magazine, and follows a trio of millennial women Jane Sloan (Katie Stevens), Kat Edison (Aisha Dee) and Sutton Brady (Meghann Fahy) living in New York City. "The three best friends work for Scarlet, a fictional global women's magazine, spearheaded by its editor-in-chief, Jacqueline Carlyle (Melora Hardin). The young women navigate their lives in the big city, including their career trajectories and romantic relationships." The show's Season 4 was so far its most critical season. It received a lot of flak for the treatment of its only Black lead Kat Edison by pairing her in a lesbian romance with a Republican Conservative. Dee issued a statement on her Instagram, calling for better representation behind the screen and in the writers' room.

It remains to be seen whether the show will redeem itself going forward.

The Australian actress is best known for her role as the strong and intelligent Kat Edison on 'The Bold Type'. Following the flak her character received in Season 4, she issued a statement calling out the show for its lackluster representation of the Black and LGBTQ characters. Dee is also known for her main role as Desi Biggins on the children's television series 'The Saddle Club'.

Meghann Fahy as Sutton Brady-Hunter

Fahy is best known for her roles as Natalie Goodman in 'Next to Normal' and as Hannah O'Connor on the daytime soap opera 'One Life to Live'. In Season 4, after her character Sutton bagged her dream job, she faced a lot of issues in her relationship with Richard Hunter (Sam Page) who walks out on her after they disagree about children.

Katie Stevens as Jane Sloan

Stevens rose to fame after finishing in eighth in the ninth season of American Idol. She is also known for her role as Karma Ashcroft on 'Faking It'. In Season 4, Jane undergoes a long-overdue double mastectomy and gets her own vertical in the magazine. In the finale, she finds herself at crossroads and face-to-face with her editor.

Creators

The show was created by Sarah Watson and produced by Universal Television for Freeform. 'The Bold Type' is inspired by the life and career of former editor-in-chief of Cosmopolitan magazine Joanna Coles who also serves as executive producer of the series.
