Ted Cruz's family returns from Cancun, parents at school want his daughters to quarantine after seen maskless
Republican Senator Ted Cruz's wife, Heidi Cruz, and their daughters, Catherine and Caroline returned from their infamous trip to Cancun, Mexico. Texas senator continues to face heat to cross the border as his home state faced a deadly winter storm, with many Texans losing access to electricity. Cruz initially blamed his daughters, adding that he wanted to be a good dad, before revising it, and admitting that the trip was "obviously a mistake".
While Cruz returned to Texas amid criticism earlier this week, his wife and daughters stayed on and returned to Texas on Saturday, February 20. The New York Post reported that the family was spotted on Saturday afternoon lining up at Cancun's airport for their flight home. As the Cruz family returns home, the senator's daughters will have to quarantine from seven to 10 days from their expensive private school in Houston and keeping in line with its guidelines. Parents of the school's kids are also demanding the family to quarantine after they were seen maskless in Cancun, according to a report.

According to Politico, St Johns School, the elite K-12 Houston private school, attended by Catherine and Caroline, had sent a mail to the parents of students on January 30, advising parents to "continue their vigilance" during spring break. The mail also recommends parents to follow CDC guidelines on additional testing and quarantine, including recommendations on getting a viral test three to five days after travel, seven days to ten days of quarantine, and to isolate themselves if they test positive.
The school also mentioned in its mail that if a student who has returned from international travel is in self-quarantine, "they will be responsible for independently completing all academic work." The mail further states that online learning via Zoom would not be available and that those in self-quarantine will not be allowed to participate in extracurricular athletics or fine arts.
As Cruz's family made their way back to Texas, the parents of other students at St John's school demanded that the school enforce safety rules that will keep the senator's daughters out of class, according to Politico. A parent of three kids at the school, Lara Hollingsworth, told the publication, "At the end of the day, he’s taking this heat for using his children as an excuse for taking a vacation. And that’s a mistake. From a parent standpoint, all I’m asking is the school follow the CDC guidelines, and I need to say I have no reason to believe they won’t.”
Hollingsworth also told the publication that some of his critics at the school said the senator displayed "hypocritical behavior." She said, "You’ve got someone out here saying, ‘I did this to be a good dad.’ No one is trying to dispute that. The question is are you fully aware of the consequences of what you did? Does it make you a bad parent? No. Does it make you a bad senator? Maybe.”
Politico also reported that the St John's School Parents Facebook page closed down comments on a post that referred “to this recent communication from the school regarding ... advisories (including CDC requirements links) for international travel," as it turned into a heated discussion.
A Cruz spokesman told Politico that the senator’s “daughters plan to follow the St John’s policy.”
