'Tubby Wolverine': Ted Cruz slammed for calling Biden's Black woman SCOTUS pick 'offensive'

Texas Senator Ted Cruz appears to be a favorite punching bag for the internet, so when he decided to go after President Joe Biden over his SCOTUS nominee, the net was ready to hit back. The Senator was brutally trolled online for calling Biden's announcement "offensive", as many Republicans have been in recent days for refusing to back Biden's pick to replace Justice Stephen Breyer.

Republicans are currently raising issues with the fact that Biden has promised to nominate a Black woman to the Supreme Court, thereby making her the first woman of color to take on that role. Right now, there are two key names being floated - Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson and Michelle Childs. The race to replace Breyer has heated up just days after he confirmed he would be stepping down, allowing Biden to nominate a successor before Republicans take control of the Senate and stall the process.

The Supreme Court has become another major battleground between the two parties after McConnell refused to consider Merrick Garland during Obama's last months as President. The GOP leader has made it very clear he will fight hard over the court, a manifestation of which we are now seeing in the pushback against Biden's nominee. And perhaps no one encapsulates that pushback better than Cruz.

Is Ted Cruz racist?

Like many of his colleagues, Cruz has had a long history of making racially-charged comments. In June 2021, he said, "Critical race theory is bigoted, it is a lie and it is every bit as racist as the Klansman in white sheets," and once also defended racist musician Ted Nugent. So being accused of being a racist is nothing new for Cruz, but like all of the criticism directed towards him, he simply walks it off.

The latest accusations have been levied following an episode of his podcast, where he went after Biden's SCOTUS nominee. "The fact that he's willing to make a promise at the outset, that it must be a Black woman, I gotta say that's offensive. You know, Black women are what, 6% of the US population? He's saying to 94% of Americans, 'I don't give a damn about you, you are ineligible,'" he said.

Of course, Cruz isn't the only one, but his choice of words appears to be problematic, even if his reasoning isn't. Ironically, the GOP didn't seem to have such a big issue when it came to nominating Justice Clarence Thomas, only the second Black man to serve on the court after Thurgood Marshall. But that was back in the 90s when SCOTUS picks were far less contentious than they are today.

'STFU Ted Cruz'

The internet was more than happy to slam Cruz after his comments went viral, with reactions such as "Ted Cruz is calling President Biden’s pledge to pick a black woman “offensive.” Cry harder, Tubby Wolverine. I love those racist tears," and "Ted Cruz is literally the poster child for white male fragility." One user mocked, "Ted Cruz is “insulted” by Biden’s pledge to nominate a Black Woman to the Supreme Court. Had Biden just called Ted’s wife ugly or claimed his dad assassinated Kennedy, Ted would be his best buddy."

"Call me crazy but I find it offensive that there have been just three non-white Supreme Court justices in the history of the fucking United States. STFU Ted Cruz," one person responded. Another tweeted, "I'm insulted that Ted Cruz has not been held accountable for his role in the January 6th insurrection. I don't give a shit about what he has to say about President Biden picking a black woman to be the next SCOTUS." One person trolled, "It's offensive and an insult that Ted Cruz is a senator." Of course, many also brought up his trip to Cancun, with one person tweeting, "Ted Cruz went to Cancun while Texans were freezing.. Ted that was offensive."
