Tavi Gevinson slams Karlie Kloss for not being 'more embarrassed' about her ties with the Trump family

Tavi Gevinson lashed out at Karlie Kloss on Wednesday over her ties with the First Family. The 24-year-old writer attacked the 27-year-old fashion model for not being forceful enough in denouncing her brother-in-law Jared Kushner and his wife Ivanka Trump, Vulture reports.

Karlie had shared a mild post on Instagram about how to combat racism in the wake of the tragic death of George Floyd in police custody last Monday. Gevinson grabbed the opportunity to offer a scathing critique in the comments section, asserting that the post was hypocritical because of Karlie's connection to Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump.

While Karlie's post offered some suggestions in how to fight racism such as talking to family members, it apparently did not address issues that were on the minds of protesters, such as police brutality against black people and the impact of systemic racism. "Karlie, give it a rest," the former Rookie Magazine editor wrote. "You have a lot of nerve to make a show of championing girls’ coding and your family in public (lame @you ignoring Ivanka on social media; she still went to your wedding)."

"I can’t believe you’re not more embarrassed not just by them but YOUR decision to only publicly disown their politics in polite ways so you can have it both ways," she added.

Gevinson said while Karlie may feel differently in private, she was only concerned about what the model chose to say in public. "I don’t know what kind of conversations you have behind the scenes (besides when Jared asked your dad to solicit solutions to a global pandemic in a Facebook group back in March) but like…….what am I looking at. This is a f***ing joke," she said.

And in a follow-up comment, Gevinson went so far as to tag Karlie's husband Joshua and suggested he "grow a spine."

Several users appeared to agree with Gevinson. "She thinks if she pretends hard enough people will forget her family ties," one wrote, while another said, "I'm sure you have ALOT to say at your next family dinner lol."

However, there were some who had Karlie's back. "Oh please, she's a democrat who with her husband has critiqued the other side of her family tree. Let's not nitpick at our allies who are actually trying to make change happen and alienate them by telling them that their actions are not good enough, every little bit helps," one wrote.

Joshua Kushner is Jared's brother, and his wife apparently has a strained relationship with both Jared and Ivanka.

During a conversation with Vogue in January, she revealed that she voted for Hillary Clinton in 2016 and that "planned" to vote as a Democrat in 2020 as well. While she may not agree with Jared and Ivanka's policy views and their connections to President Donald J. Trump, Karlie made sure to invite the couple to her wedding nonetheless.

In March this year, Jared Kushner had allegedly asked Karlie's father, a doctor, for advice on how to coordinate the US response to the COVID-19 pandemic. That conversation seemed to indicated Karlie may have been closer to that side of the family than she made it out to be.
