Taika Waititi's old tweets come back to haunt him as cancel mob stirs: ‘Guess we're just going to keep doing this’
Taika Waititi, who has time and again extended his support to queers, recently got on the wrong side of the Internet after his anti-trans tweets from 2013 resurfaced on Twitter. The ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ director drew flak for shaming trans women and beauty pageant contestants.
The 46-year-old director was then called out by a social media user saying it was not cool of Taika to “slut-shaming,” In one of his other posts, the acclaimed filmmaker had also taken a dig at Caitlyn Jenner in 2015 days after she came out as a trans woman. Taika recently made headlines after he secretly got married to British singer-songwriter Rita Ora.

In one of his 2013 tweets, Taika posted a “meth user” remark followed by an earlier rant in which he slammed beauty pageant contestants, writing, “Combining heels and bikini whilst plastering your face in orange so you resemble a leather pudding is totes empowering”, as reported by The Daily Mail.
In 2013, the New Zealander tweeted, “No disrespect to men who want to be/dress as women. I should have just said their makeup looks manly. Also no disrespect to meth users.” He was then called out by a social media user saying, ”Slut-shaming, transphobia, and immense misogyny all in one tweet. But dude, not cool” to which Taika replied, “No, it was cool.” In another post from April 2015, Taika took a sly dig at Caitlyn Jenner referencing to 2015 Charlie Hebdo terror attack in Paris, saying, “We’ll all be wearing #JeSuis[Caitlyn]Jenner badges by Monday.”
In the following years, Taika Waititi became an ally for queer stories. While explaining his passion for telling queer stories, he told Out magazine, “We’re all queer. Just to varying degrees of where we are on the spectrum, I think. I think, innately, humans have all got some degree of queerness in them.” He also shed light on voicing a gay character named Korg in Marvel’s Thor series. “I love it. I mean, I'm just amazed to hear what my friends think of me,” said Taika adding, “I'll be like, ‘Hey guys, you're looking at a little gay icon over here,’ and it feels really amazing.” Speaking of the latest controversy, the director is yet to respond on the matter. MEAWW will keep you posted.

‘Guess we're just going to keep doing this’
Social media users slammed Taika Waititi for his anti-trans tweets but a few also came in his support saying how he changed over the years. “Very intrigued by all the non-trans women calling ppl 'weird' for being mad about taika waititi's transphobia. he was in his 30s when he made the tweet. can yall stop telling trans women when they can be mad about transmisogyny?”, said one user as another posted, “Taika Waititi has had multiple transphobic tweets resurface, including one where he compares trans women to meth heads, and he’s still being called a queer icon cause he played a gay pirate, made some Nazis gay, and gave us 5 minutes of queer content over two MCU films?”
The next one posted, “Would be cool if you apologized and explained wtf you were saying this publicly 10 years ago. And donate to an org protecting trans folks. My nephew is trans i don’t appreciate this from someone I thought so highly of.” And, an individual stated, “I did not have "Taika Waititi tweet comparing a trans woman coming out to terrorist attacks in france resurfaces" on my bingo card for the week but here we are.” And, one concluded, “People discovering that Taika Waititi had a Bad Opinion on trans people 10 years ago and roasting him for it. Guess we're just going to keep doing this, huh.”
