Stray Kids’ Bang Chan explains why K-pop idols tend to lip-sync
A lot of Stays (Stray Kids’ fandom) can agree that one of the best parts of the week is when Bang Chan hosts his ‘Chan’s Room’ on VLive. Every week, Chan does a VLive in his studio where he chats with fans, recommends and reacts to songs and talks about his day. In the latest episode, in fact, he reacted to VIVIZ, Treasure and BTOB, and even wished BTOB’s Changsub a happy birthday. Well, in ‘Chan’s Room’ on February 13, Bang Chan addressed the lip-syncing debate in the K-pop industry which has now gone viral.
In the VLive, a fan asked Bang Chan to explain prerecording. The Stray Kids leader shared that there were two types of pre-recordings, one that is done on stage that is later used as a backtrack while the K-pop act performs and another is a proper prerecording one does in the studio so that it sounds like they are on stage singing live. He then went on to explain why K-pop idols do it and end up lip-syncing sometimes.

Bang Chan explains why artists lip-sync
Bang Chan explained, “We have to sing every day. It’s not like a normal every day… we have to wake up really early, we have to do a dry run or something really early. And then we have to do interviews and all these other schedules in between. And then we have that actual stage. And then, right after the stage, we have other schedules and end up sleeping late and you have to wake up early the next day. That really, as a singer, that could really put a toll onto your voice.”
He shared that this was a reason why K-pop idols sing over prerecordings so that they can lip-sync when their voice is not in a good condition that particular day. Chan shared that their busy schedule was “not good for your voice either too, really strains them all the time.” The Stray Kids star added, “But you gotta respect [idols] because everyone…every artist is a really really good singer. That’s why everyone debuted because they have the skills. They have the potential to be greater…be a really great vocalist.”
Chan says even he has bad days
Chan reiterated that lip-syncing and singing over the prerecording file was only because of their exhaustive lifestyle. He explained, “You can’t do it every day. Because it’s not really good for your throat.” He went on to confess that even he had bad days and in fact, on the day the VLive was held, “I actually sang really really bad today…but you can’t help it. I was performing for two days in a row…we kept talking, we kept laughing, we kept singing…without me knowing, my voice was gone. That’s why I think today, I sang so bad.”
Bang Chan hoped that this explained to the people out there why lip-syncing and prerecordings happen. There have often been heated debates between fans as some boast that their favorites only sing live while some claim that an artist lip-syncs because they are not a good singer. However, with the K-pop industry being extremely strict and as Chan pointed out, an artist would not get to debut as a K-pop idol if they were not a good singer.
