‘Sia is over party’ trends after she confuses Nicki Minaj with Cardi B and says she made ‘buffoon’ of herself

On Saturday, June 13, Australian singer, songwriter Sia was trending on Twitter but not in a good way. In line with the series of “Is Over Party” trends that have rocked Twitter in the last couple of months, #SiaIsOverParty was trending with more than 7,000 tweets at the time of writing.

So, what happened?

The ‘Chandelier’, ‘Cheap Thrills’, and ‘Titanium’ hitmaker got herself embroiled in the supposed long-running Cardi B and Nicki Minaj feud. The how of it is the strangest part. A fan of Twitter shared a photo of Nicki Minaj in a half-black-half-white wig -- a signature Sia look -- and asked the singer when she would collaborate with Minaj on a project.

Sia’s response, unexpectedly, was: “I love @iamcardib and although this isn’t a collaboration, I would love to collab [sic] with her any day!” Things did not end there, however.

The Australian singer tried to fix her mess. She tweeted, “My f***up,” tagging Minaj. Unfortunately, however, things got worse from there onward. She tweeted, “Dudes. I also like @MissNikkiiBaby I don’t give a s*** about feuds, George Floyd was f****** murdered. Breonna Taylor. Murdered. Come on let’s rise in unity. You think @iamcardib and Nikki are so petty that they would want you focussing on a silly feud instead of real news?” tagging Nikki Mudarris of the Vh1 reality TV show ‘Love and Hip Hop Hollywood’.

Following this, she tagged both Cardi B and Minaj in a tweet, asking, “Hey @iamcarbib @NICKIMINAJ you aren't thinking about a feud right now are you? We are focussed on the problem of systemic racism.”

All of these tweets were subsequently deleted. But not before they attracted the ire of fans. One fan wrote on Twitter, “No @Sia, you are focusing on the problem of systemic racism. Black people are trying to decompress and have lives outside of the system of racism. Please continue to focus on your issues and we will focus on ours, thanks.”

Another wrote on Twitter, “Don’t try to police black women ever again; I don’t care if they were fighting it tooth and nail. It will never be your place as a white person.”

Finally, Sia apologized with, “I totally misunderstood a tweet earlier that has resulted in me making a buffoon out of myself. Sorry @NICKIMINAJ and @iamcardib if you hear about it. Can I just like you both?”

While neither rap artists have responded to Sia’s tweets as of yet, #SiaIsOverParty continued to trend. Within the trend, however, as has become a tradition by now, K-pop fancams and genuine incredulity seemed to dominate the conversation. Many also came to Sia’s defense, arguing that the singer has always been at the forefront of issues like homophobia, racism, sexism.
