Why were the MTV EMAs canceled this year?
MTV EMAs canceled its in-person event in France for the first since its launch due to "the volatility of world events."
"Given the volatility of world events, we have decided not to move forward with the 2023 MTV EMAs out of an abundance of caution for the thousands of employees, crew members, artists, fans and partners who travel from all corners of the world to bring the show to life," a company spokesperson said.
The MTV EMAs are an annual celebration of global music. As we watch the devastating events in Israel and Gaza continue to unfold, this does not feel like a moment for a global celebration," they added.
"With thousands of lives already lost, it is a moment of mourning. We look forward to hosting the MTV EMAs again in November of 2024," the spokesperson concluded, as reported by Billboard.
JungKook, Rema, The Kid LAROI, Sabrina Carpenter and Coi Leray and Rema were among the artists who were set to perform live on this year's show.
The awards were also scheduled to be broadcast live on MTV in more than 150 countries on Sunday, November 5, from Paris Nord Villepinte.
Other performers set to perform at the MTV EMAs were Anne-Marie, David Guetta, Manuel Turizo, Ozuna, Renee Rapp and Thirty Seconds to Mars.
The event was sponsored by Dolby and Paramount+ with Bruce Gillmer and Richard Godfrey serving as executive producers alongside Debbie Phillips and Chloe Mason as producers.
Taylor Swift was also the top winner at MTV EMAs 2022
Prior to her latest triple win at the MTV EMAs 2023, Swift also emerged as the top winner of the awards last year.
The 'Midnights' creator won Best Artist, Best Video, Best Pop and Best Longform Video for 'All Too Well (10 Minute Version) (Taylorβs Version)' at the 2022 MTV EMAs, per Variety.
Before taking home four EMAs last year, she made an announced appearance at the PSD Bank Dome in Dusseldorf, Germany, wearing a black bodysuit paired with a chainmail-style skirt designed with emerald gems.
Back in 2012, Swift closed the ceremony with a circus-themed performance of 'We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together.'
