Selena Gomez's new single 'Lose You to Love Me' is being hailed as her final goodbye to Justin Bieber.

Despite the popular notion that the 27-year-old artist had written it after she ended their on-off relationship with the 'Sorry' singer in March last year, Selena wrote on Vevo ahead of her song's release that the lyrics were not just about one single thing or person but, instead, reflected several events that have transpired in her life in the last year.

"This song was inspired by many things that have happened in my life since releasing my last album," she said. "I want people to feel hope and to know you will come out the other side stronger and a better version of yourself."

However, one glance at the lyrics of the song, which Selena co-wrote with Finneas, Robin Fredriksson, Mattias Larsson, Julia Michaels and Justin Tranter, was enough to make people speculate that the heartbreaking number might be her comment on the love that she could have had with her former boyfriend.

The song begins with the powerful words: "You promised the world And I fell for it/ I put you first and you adored it/ Set fires to my forest/ And you let it burn."

Although it never mentions the 25-year-old musician by name, it drops subtle hints which seem to describe the struggles they faced in their relationship.

"In two months, you replaced us / Like it was easy / Made me think I deserved it," seem to allude to the fact that, within months of breaking up, Justin started dating his now-wife Hailey Baldwin.

Others took the phrase "Set fire to my purpose" as an Easter egg which pointed to Justin's 2015 album 'Purpose', which included several songs about Selena.

Adding to the controversy, Hailey, 22, posted a screenshot of the song 'I’ll Kill You' by Summer Walker to her Instagram Story just hours after Selena's new song dropped, making fans wonder if it was a response to the single.
