CHAUTAUQUA, NEW YORK: Acclaimed author Sir Salman Rushdie was stabbed up to 15 times on Friday, August 12. According to reports, he was at least stabbed once in the neck and once in the abdomen. The ‘Midnight's Children’ author was about to deliver a lecture at Chautauqua Institution in New York when 24-year-old Hadi Matar knifed him repeatedly on stage.  
 
Wishes poured in from renowned writers and other public figures as they condemned the attack on the Booker Prize winner. The 75-year-old, however, might lose an eye after the horrifying incident. Rushdie was immediately taken to a hospital and was put on a ventilator.  Salman Rushdie got banned in Iran and several other Islamic nations after he sparked controversy with his book ‘The Satanic Verses’. A fatwa on him was issued by Iran's Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini in 1989.

What is Salman Rushdie’s net worth?

Salman Rushdie was born in 1947 in Bombay, British India. His mother named Negin Bhatt was a teacher whereas, his father Anis Ahmed Rushdie, was a lawyer-turned-businessman. Rushdie before becoming a renowned author worked as a copywriter for ad agencies. He released his first novel titled ‘Grimus’ in 1975. However, it was his second novel ‘Midnight's Children’ which introduced him to fame.
 
The award-winning author has so far penned 15 books. In 2017, he wrote ‘The Golden House’ and his last book came in 2019 called ‘Quichotte’ which was inspired by Miguel de Cervantes classic novel Don Quixote. Speaking of his net worth, the author is valued at $10 million, as per Celebrity Net Worth. However, the website The Richest claims that the controversial author’s net worth is close to $15 million.

The author rakes in an impressive amount of moolah from book sales, movie cameos, and also from appearances on television shows. ‘Shame’, ‘The Satanic Verses’, ‘The Moor's Last Sigh’, ‘The Ground Beneath Her Feet’, ‘Fury’, ‘Shalimar the Clown’, and ‘The Enchantress of Florence’ are some of his most well-known books across the globe. Rushdie is a Booker Prize winner. He has also won many other accolades including European Union's Aristeion Prize for Literature, Germany's Write of the Year Award, the Golden PEN Award, and the Hans Christian Andersen Literature Award. In 2007, Rushdie was knighted by the Queen for his services to literature. Rushdie also won an award for Outstanding Lifetime Achievement in Cultural Humanism from Harvard University. He was ranked 13th on Times Magazine’s 50 greatest British writers since 1945.

Salman Rushdie has an ancestral house in the upscale Civil Lines area in New Delhi, India that has been mired in controversies. Rushdie’s father had agreed to sell the house to Congress in 1970 but the deal got into trouble due to disputes between the two sides. According to NDTV, the house is valued at $1.3million.  

Salman Rushdie, according to Lithub, also stayed in a safe house in London that he used after he sparked controversies for ‘The Satanic Verses’. It was equipped with bulletproof glass, security cameras, fortified walls and “bomb-proof net curtains.” The property is located at The Bishops Avenue in London. Speaking of the cars he owned, a Twitter user in 2021 had claimed that the author apparently owned a Porsche which he simply denied saying, “I am proud to say that I have never owned a Porsche.”
