Russell Crowe received quite the backlash after he shared snaps from inside the Sistine Chapel during a private tour on his social media profile.

The 58-year-old actor, who is currently in Rome to film the movie 'The Pope's Exorcist', visited the Vatican during his trip before sharing several photos from inside the world-famous chapel while taking a private tour. While photography is prohibited inside the Sistine Chapel to prevent camera flashes from damaging the artwork, some suggested that Crowe's celebrity status may have allowed him the privilege of flouting the rules.

"I'm not sure there's a more special privilege in the world than to hold the key for the Sistine Chapel and to experience its glory in silence," Russell wrote as he shared photos from the tour on Twitter.

"A very special experience as a family yesterday got to walk through the Vatican Museum by ourselves. Amazing," the actor said as he discussed his trip to the Vatican in further detail. "My mum had walked these corridors with my father 20+ years ago with the thousands of tourists that flock here daily and make it the third most popular museum globally. We were given access to rooms, perspectives, and parts of the collection you don't get to see as a regular tourist. As we squeezed into a tiny private elevator and ascended to a balcony few get to see, she squeezed my hand and said 'I wish your father was here,'" he said, adding, "We stepped onto the balcony, seeing a majestic sweeping view of Rome. We could also hear the Swiss Guard band rehearsing."

However, the actor was slammed for taking photos inside the chapel, with some asking how he managed to get away with it.

"Thought you weren’t allowed to take photos inside the chapel," reporter Savanna Young tweeted.

"You are not supposed to take photos in the Chapel Russel, you should know better," another user responded.

"Hey! When I was there in the Sistine Chapel, they got mad at me for taking photos. The privilege of being Maximo Decimo Meridio," another user quipped on Twitter.

Russell is reportedly playing a priest battling demons in the forthcoming supernatural thriller, 'The Pope's Exorcist', which is based on Gabrielle Amorth's published memoirs. The film is being directed by young Australian filmmaker Julius Avery, who shot to fame after his 2018 horror film 'Overlord.' Russell's character is based on Father Gabrielle Amorth, a real-life figure who was based at the Vatican and is said to have performed more than 60,000 exorcisms. His demise in September 2016 prompted a national day of mourning in Italy.
