Kate Middleton mercilessly slammed for 'truly awful' '80s style blue banquet dress
The Duchess of Cambridge chose to don a ruched Alexander McQueen gown with a drop waist and fishtail skirt for the State Banquet
While we wouldn't really know of the stress one goes through while selecting a dress for an important royal occasion like the State Banquet, we're quite determined that the Duchess of Cambridge got her dress selection absolutely wrong when she attended the glittery and glamorous event alongside her husband, the Duke of Cambridge.
Kate Middleton and Prince William attended the State Banquet in order to welcome the Dutch royals, and the mother-of-three chose to don a ruched Alexander McQueen gown with a drop waist and fishtail skirt for the occasion. However, according to a lot of royal fans and watchers, the gown gave them the feel of a prom dress or an '80s bridesmaid gown.
At the State Banquet, William and Kate were joined by other senior royals for the lavish dinner hosted in honor of King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima of the Netherlands. According to the existing royal protocol, all female members present at the banquet, from both the Dutch and British royal families, wear beautiful and glittery ballgowns and tiaras for the event.
The Duchess of Cambridge, who was making her third appearance at a State Banquet, finished off her ridiculous dress with the diamond and pearl Cambridge Lover's Knot tiara owned by Princess Diana. Kate had previously worn the same tiara to the Chinese State Banquet in 2015 and the Spanish State Banquet last year.
To add that 'oomph' factor to her whole look, Kate chose to wear Diana’s Collingwood Pearl and Diamond Earrings and the diamond and pearl Queen Alexandra Wedding Necklace, which she received on loan from the Queen. Reports say that the piece of jewelry was a favorite of the Queen Mother, but it had not been seen out in public since the monarch inherited it, until recently.
Fans of the Duchess took to social media to express their views on Kate's dress, some even calling it the worst dress she's ever worn during her time as a royal family member. "This dress is maybe the worst Kate ever wore. It's shocking, actually, she really needs a fashion makeover," one person wrote on Twitter. Another user commented saying that the dress must have been a request from Kate's daughter Princess Charlotte, who wanted mommy to dress up like Elsa from 'Frozen'.
In an attempt to be funny, another user commented on how Kate must have lifted the dress straight out of the current exhibition of Princess Diana's vintage dresses at Kensington Palace. "Normally I'm a fan of what Kate wears, but this is truly awful," another said. "What was she thinking." One user even said that she used to have a Barbie doll that wore the same dress as Kate.
The last time Duchess Kate caused an outrage over her choice of clothes was back in January this year when the royal wore a couple of hideous and 'frumpy' floral dresses by Erdem two nights in a row during the royal tour of Sweden.
