Roger Waters dragged for saying he’s far more important than Drake, The Weeknd: ‘Stuck in the past’

The former Pink Floyd frontman Roger Waters stirred a debate on the Internet after he placed himself way above hip-hop legend Drake and R&B icon The Weeknd- both of whom hail from Canada. The rock veteran in an interview with The Globe and the Mail voiced his concern over The Weeknd’s concert getting more coverage than his.

Making a bold statement with the Canadian publication, the 78-year-old rock star, who is currently in the middle of his ‘This is Not a Drill’ tour asserted that it seemed a bit odd when his tour got less coverage and The Weeknd got more attention. This comes after The Weeknd was set to kick off his ‘After Hours Till Dawn’ stadium tour in Toronto on July 8. Somehow, Roger’s shows too landed on the same night. Social media users did not waste any time reminding Roger how big Drake and The Weeknd as artistes are.

‘Have no idea what or who the Weeknd is’

In his interview with the publication, Roger Waters did not shy away from taking sly dig at The Weeknd and rap star Drake. “I have no idea what or who the Weeknd is, because I don’t listen to much music”, said the legendary musician as he continued, “People have told me he’s a big act. Well, good luck to him. I’ve got nothing against him. Would it not have been possible to review his show one night and my show another night?”, as reported by Page Six.

Further expressing his views on the matter, Roger Waters asserted that his statements were not intended as “a personal attack,” adding, “With all due respect to the Weeknd or Drake or any of them, I am far, far, far more important than any of them will ever be, however many billions of streams they’ve got. There is stuff going on here that is fundamentally important to all of our lives.”

Roger Waters might have placed himself a notch higher than the two global icons but the numbers clearly tell a different story. While Rogers has scored only one UK Number 1 single, six UK Number 1 albums, and one Grammy with his former band Pink Floyd, The Weeknd has the number one Billboard Hot 100 Song of All Time to his name with four Grammys. Drake, on the other hand, has 11 number one Billboard Hot 100 bangers to his credit along with four Grammys and several other chart-topping records.

‘He’s stuck in the past and denying the truth’

Social media users thronged to Twitter to speak on Roger Waters’ latest controversial remarks. “Roger Waters couldn't make Take Care but Drake can make The Wall”, said one user as another chimed in, “Roger Waters is a legend, an all-time great, sold 250million records & an icon but hes 80. Hes had his time & the gig is in Toronto. Drake & The Weeknd are both in their primes and are homegrown talents. Makes sense they'll get media coverage.  No need to be bitter.” Another stated, “Roger Waters is a clown for this lol. drake and weeknd are definitely bigger than him and it sounds like he’s stuck in the past and denying the truth.”

The next one shared, “I love Pink Floyd, I love Roger Waters too, but why is he comparing himself to The Weeknd and Drake.” Meanwhile, an individual tweeted, “Nobody cares about Pink Floyd in 2022. Get over it, dude.” Another posted, “Pink Floyd is amazing but to say you’re more important than someone is wild. You don’t have to like Drake and The Weeknd’s music to respect them as people that’s weird.” And, one user concluded, “Pink Floyd is one of my favorite 70's rock bands, but duuuuude. He needs a slice of humble pie.”
