TETON, WYOMING: Robert Lowery, a missing hiker who was found dead in Wyoming near Gabby Petito's remains, died by suicide, officials revealed. The Teton County Coroner’s Office in Wyoming has confirmed that Lowery died by suicide from a gunshot wound to his head. The body of Lowery, a father of two from Houston, was found on September 28 near the Black Canyon Trail in the Bridger-Teton National Forest, where Petito’s remains were found on September 19. 

After days of a massive search, Gabby Petito's remains were found in an area of Grand Teton National Park & Bridger-Teton National Forest, after she went missing while on a cross-country trip with her boyfriend, Brian Laundrie. That summer, two other people had gone missing in or near Grand Teton National Park, namely Robert Lowery, who was last seen towards the end of August, and Cian McLaughlin, who was reported missing in mid-June.

“The widespread news coverage of the Gabby Petito search helped bring light to Lowery’s case, and resulted in at least two members of the public calling local authorities this past weekend with new information about his possible last seen point,” officials said in a statement. Lowery had reportedly been on the Black Canyon Trail in a black baseball cap and carrying a Nike duffel bag. The hiker's body was then discovered by a dog team off the trail on a steep, wooded slope. As many as 25 volunteers had hiked over 75 miles during the search.

Lowery is survived by two children, a daughter, 12, and a son, 15, and their mother, says a GoFundMe page set up in his memory. The page is operated by Lowery's sisters, Anne and Leigh Lowery, and will be "dedicated to the support of his children’s education & future." "Bob had been missing since August 20th in the greater Jackson Hole area. On September 28, the Teton County Sheriff’s Office informed our family of the untimely passing & discovery of Robert “Bob” Lowery near Black Canyon Trail outside of Wilson, Wyoming. Bob, a loving father, is survived by two beautiful children, Meredith and Luke, and their mother, Christelle," the website reads.

"The children will have the unconditional love and support our full extended family; however, in the wake their father’s unexpected death, we want to ensure that they are best set up for their future. Regardless of monetary contribution, please know that we have felt the continued love, support & prayers from our community, family & friends throughout this tragedy. Thank you all from the bottom of our hearts," it adds. Till the writing of this article, $45,002 had been raised of $50,000 goal.
