Rihanna has slammed the use of tear gas on migrants on the Mexican border by US authorities, terming it an act of "terrorism," even as US President Donald Trump defended the move on Monday.

Border Patrol agents were seen and photographed on Sunday releasing tear gas onto crowds of migrants, majority of whom were children.

Riri took to Instagram to share a picture tweet which reported the tear gas incident and wrote, "terrorism" alongside it as the caption. Rihanna shared a post by Chris Sherman, the Mexican correspondent for the Associated Press, which said, "US Border Patrol has just launched tear gas into Mexico. Breeze carrying it hundreds of yards. Parents running away with choking toddlers. #migrantcaravan."

Apart from Rihanna, other celebrities like Kelly Rowland and Eva Longoria also called out Donald Trump for authorizing the use of tear gas.

Longoria took to social media to share, "This is not who we are as Americans. Throwing tear gas at children? These are not criminals. These are families seeking shelter. Of course, we have to protect our borders, but we should be using those resources to protect our country against terrorism. This is a baby IN A DIAPER. What are you thinking @realdonaldtrump??"

"These are human beings. I beg you to treat them with compassion and treat them with dignity. They are fleeing drug-torn countries that is historically due to an instability that WE caused. These are children and mothers seeking refuge. This photo has broken my heart and my belief in humanity," she continued.

It has been reported that the US authorities arrested around 69 people on Sunday.

On Monday, President of the United States Donald Trump defended the use of tear gas and asked the Mexican officials to get a grip on the "flag waving migrants". Trump took to Twitter to say, "Mexico should move the flag-waving migrants, many of whom are stone cold criminals, back to their countries."

Trump further added, "Do it by plane, do it by bus, do it any way you want, but they are NOT coming into the U.S.A. We will close the Border permanently if need be. Congress, fund the WALL!"

Despite many people being against the use of tear gas and calling it an "overkill", Trump was very on board with the move. "They were being rushed by some very tough people and they used tear gas," Trump shared. "Here's the bottom line: Nobody is coming into our country unless they come in legally," he added.

According to officials, around 500 of the migrants, mostly men, are criminals though they have not backed up their claims with concrete evidence.
