A rift started to show in Meghan Markle’s relationship with the royal family just four days after her fairytale wedding with Prince Harry, a royal source has said.

Meghan and Harry tied the knot on May 19 in 2018 in a star-studded ceremony held at Windsor Castle. However, in January 2020, they announced their decision to step down from the senior royal duties to start a new independent life. Currently, the pair is living in Los Angeles, California, with their son Archie. The Sussexes have rented Tyler Perry's $18 million mansion in the city.

The royal source, Lady Colin Campbell, has now claimed that cracks started to show between the Duchess of Sussex and the palace immediately after the lavish wedding. According to Campbell as reported by the Daily Star, by May 23, 2018, just four days after the wedding, Meghan was the topic of conversation at her house as she had done something "astonishing" at a party for Prince Charles the day before.

Campbell, who is best known for her 1992 ‘Diana in Private: The Princess Nobody Knows’, told the UK tabloid how the royals had wanted Meghan to be a "success", but things did not go as planned. Campbell made the revelations ahead of her new book, titled ‘Meghan and Harry: The Real Story’, which will be out later this month. The insider said she started writing the book being "positive and invested in" Meghan being a success, but subsequently felt it was only important to tell the truth.

“I knew the tremendous amount of hope the Royal Family invested in Meghan being a success. Hundreds of millions of people of color were rooting for Meghan, I was rooting for Meghan, being a Jamaican, I was emotionally invested in Meghan's success. Virtually everybody I know, including my Royal friends, the wider aristocracy, wanted Meghan to be a success. But it quickly became apparent the ride may not be as smooth as everybody had hoped it would be, and it would not be as quiet as positive as everybody had hoped it would be,” Campbell said.

Continuing further, the author told the Daily Star that the party was thrown just a few days after the wedding to celebrate Prince Charles’ charity works in the year of his 70th birthday. At the party, Harry gave a speech. However, at the same party, the ‘Suits’ actress did something that "astonished" an attendee with "impeccable palace connections".

“I can’t repeat it exactly, it’s in the book, but what I can say is, something happened at the very first garden party at Buckingham Palace to celebrate Prince Charles’ 70th birthday and all of his charity work. Something happened there on Tuesday, [May 22] and I was told about it on Wednesday [May 23] evening at dinner by a household name with impeccable palace connections. We were all absolutely gobsmacked and astonished, we all thought this doesn't bode well. It was not a good harbinger, we were all hoping against hope the information was wrong, but of course, it was accurate,” Campbell added.
