As everyone reels from Will Smith and Chris Rock's slap gate incident at the 2022 Academy Awards, comedian and former Oscars host Ricky Gervais took a dig at the incident. The 60-year-old retweeted a clip posted by @DavidBrentMovie from an episode of 'The Office'. In the scene, Gervais' character says, "Particularly for his wife. And she’s got alopecia. So... not a happy home life."

At the 2022 Oscars, Chris Rock made a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith's hair, calling it 'GI Jane' which didn't go down well with her husband, actor Will Smith. The 53-year-old actor walked on stage and slapped Rock. Last year, Jada announced that she had shaved her head after being diagnosed with alopecia. Amidst the controversial incident, Gervais' Golden Globes roasts have resurfaced.

Gervais has made multiple controversial jokes in the past. In 2010, Gervais took a dig at Angelina Jolie's adoption of her children and said, "You could be a little Asian child with no possessions and no money. But you could see a picture of Angelina Jolie, and you'd think, 'Mummy!'" At the 2016 Golden Globes, Gervais joked about Caitlyn Jenner's transition into a trans woman. He said, "What a year she's had. She became a role model for trans people everywhere, showing great bravery in breaking down barriers and destroying stereotypes. She didn't do a lot for women drivers, but you can't have everything, can you?"

Multiple viewers highlighted Gervais' Golden Globes clip, where he brutally roasted Hollywood celebrities. They quipped about how his controversial roasts and jokes have not yet caused a physical assault. One tweet read, "When Ricky Gervais finds out that it's now acceptable for actors to slap comedians." Another said, "Just want to congratulate Leonardo DiCaprio for not getting up and hitting Ricky Gervais because apparently that was an option."

A third joked, "Will Smith slaps Chris Rock in the face at the Oscars so obviously it’s Ricky Gervais who’s trending #1 ?!?" A fourth quipped, "Ricky Gervais is laughing his British ass off. 'All the shit I said and I was never assaulted' #WillAndChris." A fifth commented, "Ricky Gervais if he had hosted todays oscars in front of Will Smith."

One user tweeted, "Sorry to drag @rickygervais into this but his jokes at the Golden Globes were brutal. BRUTAL. No one slapped him because... well... he's a comedian. @chrisrock didn't deserve this and Will Smith ruined what should have been one of the best nights of his life." Another said, "Literally seconds later... Ricky Gervais made fun of Mel Gibson's alcoholism, racism, and domestic issues 4 feet away from Mel, and Mel just laughed. Hahahaha. Resorting to violence is never the answer."

A third added, "This is how to host an awards show. Completely bust open the hypocrisy. Take it away, Ricky Gervais..." A fourth wrote, "Can you believe an award show host got punched in the face and it wasn't Ricky Gervais," while a sixth joked, "Ricky Gervais called basically all of Hollywood out for being pedophile enablers at the 2020 Golden Globes, and no one slapped him."

One user said, "Will smith slapping Chris Rock was funny but nothing will ever top Ricky Gervais calling everyone a pedophile at the 2020 Golden Globes all during the height of harvey weinstein/ jeffrey epstein gate," while another posted Gervais' 2011 Golden Globes introduction and wrote, "Ricky Gervais' scathing introduction to the 2011 Golden Globes."
