'Ray Donovan' gets canceled by Showtime after Season 7 cliffhanger and fans are left pining for a closure
This is one that even television’s most iconic “fixer” will not be able to fix. Showtime’s crime drama series ‘Ray Donovan’, which recently wrapped up its seventh season, has been canceled.
The Liev Schreiber-starrer, that began its journey in June of 2013, has been a part of the Showtime signature originals. The news of its cancellation, per The Hollywood Reporter, arrives just days before the network is going to bid yet another one of its iconic originals, ‘Homeland’, adieu after eight seasons.
“After seven incredible seasons, Ray Donovan has concluded its run on Showtime,” the network said in a press statement. “We are proud that the series ended amid such strong viewership and on such a powerful note. Our deepest thanks go to Liev Schreiber, Jon Voight, showrunner David Hollander and the entire cast and crew, past and present, for their dedicated work.”
Reportedly, Showtime’s co-head of entertainment Gary Levine told reporters at TCA in January that the series was “nearing the end of its run”, adding that it had always been the plan to run the show for “about seven or eight seasons”.
Unfortunately for fans, this move will deny them closure. The season seven finale, co-written by showrunner Hollander and Schreiber, ended on a cliffhanger. Following the episode, Schreiber took to Instagram on January 21 and thanked fans for their “outpouring of love and support for our cast and crew”.
Schreiber, however, also added in the message to fans: “I know the big question on everyone’s mind is whether there will be a Season Eight. Truth is it’s in [Showtime]’s hands. So if you want more, reach out to them… and let them know how you feel. Either way, it’s been an amazing ride and we have all of you to thank for it.”
‘Ray Donovan’ was produced by The Mark Gordon Company, Ann Bidderman Company, Bider Sweet Productions, David Hollander Productions, and Showtime Networks.
