Thanks to science and technology, mankind may have set foot on the moon, but when it comes to something as simple as finding the right foundation shade that matches our skin's undertone perfectly is still a huge challenge, especially for melanin-rich skin. If you happen to have sensitive and acne-prone skin, then finding base makeup products that don't irritate or aggravate your skin is nothing short of a miracle.

As a woman of color with acne-prone skin, Alicia Scott was no stranger to these struggles. Tired of trying to find makeup that fit the bill for her, the Atlanta-based entrepreneur decided to launch her own cosmetic brand- Range Beauty, which focussed on creating clean and inclusive makeup products that will leave your skin feeling healthy and happy. Scott will soon be pitching for her brand on the upcoming episode 14 of 'Shark Tank' before the Sharks- Mark Cuban, Barbara Corcoran, Kevin O’Leary, Lori Greiner, and guest Shark Emma Grede. While we will have to wait and watch to see if Scott managed to impress the Sharks with her promising makeup brand, in the meanwhile, you can read all about Scott and her brand here.

What is Range Beauty?

Any person with eczema, acne-prone, or sensitive skin can vouch for how its next to impossible to find a good base makeup product that doesn't aggravate their skin. This already daunting task becomes twice as challenging if the person happens to be melanin-rich, as there aren't enough shade options from the brands that do sell makeup targeted for persons with sensitive skin. But thanks to Range beauty, you no longer have to pick between risking your skin's health by buying a foundation that matches you but aggravates your skin, or buying a foundation that doesn't irritate your skin but leaves you looking like a great elephant. With Range Beauty's foundation, you can get the best of both worlds- clean and inclusive makeup that will leave your skin glowing with no need for any filters. "Created out of a need for more diverse shades and less toxic ingredients in the cosmetics industry, Range Beauty was born. It is a brand that encourages you to express yourself, while still allowing your true skin to shine through," states the brand.  Some of the key features of Range beauty's makeup include:

Real shades for real skin: Actual shades and undertones that match you, but aren't seen in the makeup aisles

Good for skin ingredients: Formulated with botanicals like calendula, chamomile, & argan oil to help soothe and nourish

No irritating stuff: We leave out the synthetic dyes & fragrances, talc, sulfates, & phthalates

Always keep it clean: Sustainable, vegan, & cruelty-free

Who is the founder?

Alicia Scott is the CEO and founder of Range beauty. On the brand's website, Scott shared, "I created Range to feel seen. I wanted a makeup line I could confidently wear on my beautiful, brown skin while taking care of my eczema and acne." Scott began her career in the New York fashion industry, where she noticed the lack of shades available during photo shoots and runway shows. This in turn led her to take a look at her own cosmetics collection which was lacking due to limited availability for her skin tone. Not only did she find it difficult to locate the right shade and undertone at her local drugstores, but numerous brands used ingredients that inflamed her eczema and acne. She then decided to create one solution for both of these problems and developed Range Beauty, a makeup line with skincare benefits. She stopped asking, “why can’t there be better options for us?” and created one.

In an interview with xoNecole she shared, "It made me think of the lack of shades available to us. On top of that I was dealing with eczema and acne-prone skin, so I wanted a line that wouldn't irritate my skin. That was in 2014, [when] there wasn't as much of a clean beauty trend [around] as there is now. So when I would look for alternatives, a lot of the products that would come up were very fair shades. In doing more research, I found out about the issues with Black women being exposed to twice the amount of toxic beauty products due to the lack of products for our skin tone. Just thinking about how those ingredients were tied to breast cancer and hormone disruption, I just really wanting to create a solution."

What is the cost of Range Beauty products and where to buy them?

Range Beauty currently sells 21 unique shades of their True intentions Hydrating foundation for $21. The brand also has a sample kit for their foundation, which can be used to find your exact matching shade in case you're confused with picking out the right shade. The sample kit contains five tester-sized foundations of various shades. The sample kit retails for $8. The foundations and other products from the brand have received rave reviews from its customers. A customer wrote, "I could not say more positive things about this foundation. It checks every box I have been searching for in a foundation and I am going to be buying it again and again. I can’t wait for more products from Range so I can buy those too."

Where is Range Beauty now?

Scott took to her Instagram to share her success story. "When your investors look like you. Okay let’s talk about some losses before the win:
• Launched @range_beauty August 2018, pitched at my first pitch competition hosted by @ariansimone in September 2018.
• Made it through the preliminary application round and went to pitch at @spanx HQ.
• I lost and didn’t make it to the main stage. I sat in the audience until the end of the night watching the finalists, listening and learning. I also went up to my judge and asked what I could do to improve.
• April 2019, another Fearless competition, this time a finalist on the main stage pitching to a full investor panel at @facebook HQ. I lost again.
• November 2020, my third time pitching to the @fearless.fund and this time I secured the bag😭
Fast forward to today, where I went from being in the audience to speaking on the stage as a portfolio company. I’m in awe of this journey, the blessings, the lessons and the people like @ariansimone who supported me from the beginning. I’m beyond proud to have this incredible group of Black women be the first investors on my cap table. Thank you for this incredible week!"

Who will steal the deal?

Barbara Corcoran may be very interested in the brand, but eventually, it will boil down to the brand's sales numbers, and demand for the Sharks to decide whether they want to invest in the brand or not.
