SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA: Netflix's latest Korean drama, 'Queen of Tears', tackles themes of heartbreak, and the complexities of love in a way that is both heartwarming and devastating.

'Queen of Tears' premiered on Netflix and TVING on March 9, 2024, tackling the messy reality that can follow after "I do."

We meet Baek Hyun-woo (played by Kim Soo-hyun) three years into his marriage to Hong Hae-in (played by Kim Ji-won). The initial romantic K-drama dream has faded in this show.

However, the story takes a sharp turn when Hae-in reveals a brain tumor and a life expectancy of just three months.

Baek Hyun-woo and Hong Hae-in's chemistry shines in this K-drama

At first, Hyun-woo just pretended to love Hae-in to get a good deal in their divorce. It seemed crazy, but the pair's dynamic made it funny! However, as time passed, feelings started to change. Seeing Hae-in sad and lonely under her tough act reminded Hyun-woo of himself.

Kim Ji-won did an amazing job showing both Hae-in's bravery and her hidden fear. Witnessing Hae-in's vulnerability cracks open Hyun-woo's own emotional walls. Seeing him soften towards her, and vice versa is heartwarming.

Their journey from loathing to love is captivating, and it's no wonder viewers are swooning over their chemistry. Sure, the plot might have its flaws, but Soo-hyun and Ji-won's captivating performances make 'Queen of Tears' a must-watch.

Meanwhile, the series relies on some tired K-drama tropes, particularly with the introduction of Hae-in's manipulative ex-flame, Yoon Eun-seong (played by Park Sung-hoon). His presence feels unnecessary, a caricature villain whose sole purpose seems to be making Hyun-woo's actions seem less reprehensible.

Similarly, the series leans heavily on the often dysfunctional dynamics of Hae-in's family, adding unnecessary drama that detracts from the central narrative.

'Queen of Tears' is a refreshing blend of chemistry and complexity

'Queen of Tears' tackles serious issues between the couples, but it manages to be funny at the same time. Kim Soo-hyun is hilarious as the regular guy who feels totally out of place in Hae-in's crazy rich and messed-up family.

Their chemistry is what really makes this show special. Even though they barely talk to each other, you can tell they still care about each other.

However, the show spends too much time on other characters and their problems. It can be confusing, like trying to follow a conversation at a giant family reunion. Thankfully, Soo-hyun and Ji-won's performances keep you hooked despite the overstuffed plot.

Further, 'Queen of Tears' succeeds by grounding its fantastical K-drama elements in a relatable exploration of human emotions.

The unpredictable nature of the story is a testament to its brilliance. By weaving familiar tropes with a nuanced exploration of love and loss, 'Queen of Tears' earns its place as a must-watch for fans of Korean dramas and anyone seeking a complex and emotional story.

'Queen of Tears' is available to stream on Netflix
