The Queen reportedly gifted Prince Harry and Meghan Markle a residence in Frogmore Cottage because she feared that they would otherwise leave the UK permanently.

During negotiations, Queen Elizabeth insisted on her grandson being able to have a comfortable home in the country so that he remains a part of the royal family.

According to a report in the Mail, a source shared, "It is very telling that the Queen makes clear [in her statement] that she has given them a home on her favorite estate and that they are going to keep it. She wants them to have a family home in the UK."

"But they were constantly being beaten up about the cost of the Frogmore renovations. So there was no hesitation in their mind of offering to pay the money back in order to be free of any public obligations," the source shared.

Other sources have also shared the fact that the Queen made a point of saying that she wanted them to have a home in the UK.

Harry and Meghan will also start to pay commercial rent on the property in order to allow them to use it as their home base when they are in Britain and will pay its running costs as well. According to experts, the five-bedroom cottage could cost an estimate of around $13,000 (£10,000) a month in rent.

Apart from funding Frogmore, the couple will also be facing the cost of setting up a new home in Canada. The couple faced a lot of backlash with their bombshell announcement to step down as senior royals and spend most of their time abroad.

The couple's decision followed months after leaving the taxpayer with a massive bill to have their Frogmore home refurbished.

It was also reported that the Queen was "privately unhappy" over the issue of the cost to the taxpayer. The couple had moved into the home around nine months ago after it was gifted to them by the Queen.
