Princess Nokia shared a string of steamy photographs featuring Latino American rapper and actor Bodega Bamz to help promote his song 'Waiting For Tonight', a remix of the iconic Jennifer Lopez track of the same name, which features Nokia on the cover art. But the discussion on the pictures got rather deep when the artiste delved into their gender and sexuality in response to comments.

Nokia's post featured the rapper and actor in lingerie with the Puerto Rican flag printed on it, in addition to some rather sensual shots with Bamz including one where he appears to be spanking Nokia. And while these shots were undoubtedly going to draw in a stream of comments, it was one in particular that caught Nokia's attention: "I miss my Tomboy kinda Princess Nokia." Nokia, who has previously revealed they are gender nonconforming, took a moment to clarify their identity to the commenter.

Beginning with a heartfelt, "Hi my love," Nokia shared, "I'm still a gender non confirming person. Still love expressing androgynous energies and emotions. Still queer and boyish. But I love the gender spectrum, and presenting him fem is also really fun and new for me to explore." Nokia shared that they were robbed of the experience previously, stating, "The real reason I was a tomboy growing up was because my foster mother wanted to hide my beauty, and made me dress poorly with baggy clothes to embarrass me." Nokia further added, "I managed to reclaim it and make something very beautiful of it."

For many who do not fit neatly within the gender binary, the experience of trying to find their own place somewhere along the spectrum can be quite a struggle. And while some find their journey takes them entirely off the spectrum itself, such as Arca who also dropped by to show Nokia some love on the post, others find fluidity in embracing all aspects of it.

Nokia continued, "As I heal my traumas, and understood the root of my style patterns and ideas, I courageously have stepped into this new way of dressing." The artiste then reassured fans by stating, "Nothing about me has changed. I'm just evolving and exploring. My central message will always be devoted to nonconformity and internal happiness. To owning my ideas, choices, music, identity. To being unapologetically myself under any circumstance."

Fans were immensely moved by Nokia's message. One comment read, "Damn thank you for your vulnerability and honesty! Beautifully said," while another person shared, "Wow I think you just made me realize why I always wore baggy/tomboy clothing. My dad wouldn't let me wear skirts or dresses or even shorts growing up." One person commented, "You are a queen," to which another responded, "and a king." Fans also stated the artiste was "so strong, so inspirational," and another fan declared, "YES tell dem bby can't no straight presenting relationship change the breadth of your identity."

For many people, the scarcity of gender-nonconforming representation is already difficult to cope with, but it can be made harder when people with such identities are required to 'present' one specific way to be acknowledged as being nonconforming. One comment noted, "It means so much when a public GNC queen/king is vocal re: honoring their femme side they never got to, because it's ~their choice~ and not that they are cis-straight-girl by default (keep sayin it loud!)."
