William isn't a snob and was just showing concern for Harry when he was marrying Meghan, says Diana's butler
Princess Diana's butler, Paul Burrell, has defended Prince William after Prince Harry branded his elder brother a "snob". William had warned his brother not to jump into marrying Meghan Markle very quickly which led to Harry dubbing him as a "snob". Burrell, 62, who was a butler to William and Harry's mother, Princess Diana, has defended William.
He said William is "not a snob" and that all he was doing was "showing concern" for his younger brother as marrying into the monarchy is "not easy for anyone". While speaking on Good Morning Britain via video, Burrell said that William is "rational and calm" while Harry is "fiery and hot". He also said that William had been looking out for his brother and wanted to "educate" him before he married Meghan. Even Meghan and Harry's upcoming biography, 'Finding Freedom', touches upon the issue of the brothers' shaky relationship.
In the book, it is alleged that William had told his brother to "take as much time as he needed" to get to know "this girl" Meghan before tying the knot with her. "William is not a snob. That is not true. He would only show concern for his brother marrying someone and bringing them into the royal family. Trying to educate him, saying, 'It's not easy for anyone marrying into this family and I'm concerned about you'. And showing his concern. We're talking about two very different personalities. William is rational and calm and Harry is fiery and hot," Burrell explained.
Burrell had served as a footman for the Queen and then as Princess Diana's butler for 10 years until she passed away in 1997. "Meghan soon found out she would come up against the grey suits," Burrell shared. "As Diana found, they're the people that run the other households in the royal families and you can't come across those because those are the people that run the show," he added.
"Meghan soon found out she had to please everyone, she wasn't just marrying Harry. She was marrying a whole institution, a thousand years of royal history, " Burrell continued. He also spoke about how given Princess Diana's death, the Duchess of Cambridge could be the person to help bring Harry and William back together and help "fill the void".
"Of course there is a void between them now. That should be filled by their mother, but of course, their mother is not here. I would like to think maybe Kate will step into the void and bring those boys back together, they will come back together, they will be together they belong together and I hate to see them apart," Burrell said.
The biography, 'Finding Freedom', due to be released on August 11, also says that Harry's relationship with his older brother Prince William had started to deteriorate "shortly before the couple became secretly engaged in August 2017". The two authors, Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand, say that the claims made in the book have been based on "participation of those closest to the couple" which include members of Harry and Meghan's inner circle.
