Prince William really wants to return to the NHS as an air ambulance pilot to help do his bit and fight against the coronavirus that has wreaked havoc across the UK.

The Duke of Cambridge had flown as a medic for around two years with the East Anglian Air Ambulance until 2017. It is reported that William, 37, had made the confession while on a visit to an NHS call center in Croydon, south London.

A source shared, "William has been seriously considering returning as an air ambulance pilot to help in the current pandemic. He knows the whole country is doing its bit and he wants to help. But it's complicated as he was originally grounded from the job so that he could become a senior working royal," The Sun reports.

"That role is even more important now given that Charles has been ill, Harry has walked away with Meghan and Andrew has been effectively barred from public life. But William is very keen to do anything he can to help," the insider revealed.

The father of three had worked as a pilot for the East Anglian Air Ambulance for around 18 months between the years 2015 and 2017. He had stepped down from his duties in order to take up more royal roles for the Queen.

Earlier this month, William had become the patron of the London Air Ambulance Charity that had been established in 1989 and also provides rapid emergency care in the capital. As its patron, William is set to champion the important work that the group does.

According to a statement by Kensington Palace, "His Royal Highness has seen first-hand the impact these first responders have upon the lives of patients with critical injuries." In January last year, he had visited the Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel where he met clinicians, paramedics, pilots, and crew members.

At the time, the CEO of London's Air Ambulance Charity, Jonathan Jenkins, shared, "We are honored that The Duke of Cambridge has chosen to become Patron of London's Air Ambulance charity after getting to know us last year. The Duke truly understands our work and knows that every second counts in an emergency."

"We know that with his help as well as the continued support of the public, our crews can reach those who need them most – serving the people of London 24 hours a day, every day of the year," he added.

Prince William is currently staying at Anmer Hall in Norfolk along with his wife, Kate Middleton, 38, and three children, George, six, Charlotte, four, and Louis, one. Prince William's father, Prince Charles, 71, himself was diagnosed with COVID-19.

On Monday, March 30, Prince Charles was let out of self-isolation just a week after being diagnosed. The Queen, 93, and her husband, Prince Philip, 98, are currently in 'good health' and are keeping away from the public at Windsor Castle.

Prince William's brother Prince Harry is staying in Los Angeles along with wife Meghan Markle and son Archie. March 31 will serve as Harry and Meghan's last day as senior members of the royal family.
