After the cinematic 'Dreaming' theme for their last one, the latest Pirelli Calendar has taken the more historical route. The 2020 calendar, part of which was unveiled today, features stars like Claire Foy, Mia Goth, Chris Lee, Indya Moore, Rosalía, Stella Roversi, Yara Shahidi, Kristen Stewart, and Emma Watson.

The theme for this year is centered around Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet and is called 'Looking for Juliet'. The spread is shot by celebrated fashion photographer Paolo Roversi. In a statement, Pirelli said that for this 47th edition, Roversi has tapped into the "Juliet that exists in every woman". In a first for the calendar, it is also accompanied by a short film.

"I was looking for a pure soul, someone full of innocence that combined strength, beauty, tenderness, and courage," Roversi said, "I found this in the glimmers of an eye, in the gestures and words of Emma and Yara, Indya and Mia. And in the smiles and tears of Kristen and Claire. In the voice and chants of Chris and Rosalía. And in Stella, the innocence. Because there’s a Juliet in every woman,” he concludes. “And I will never stop looking for her."

The shots encompass a wide range of emotions, from a teary-eyed Claire Foy to a coy Indya Moore. The outfits are a mix of modern and history, with denim jackets as well as chains, corsets, and sneakers making its way to the shots.

The Pirelli Calendar seems to have departed from the beachy glam shots from its previous years and has moved on to more cinematic, woke concepts. It was once synonymous with oiled up models in barely-there bikinis, their skin glistening in the sun.

The 2019 calendar featured the likes of Misty Copeland and Gigi Hadid and was shot by Albert Watson. The one before that had an all-black cast in 'Alice in Wonderland' posing in all kinds of frivolous and fun costumes from the story for Tim Walker.
