Piers Morgan blasts George Clooney for claiming Meghan is being vilified by the media: 'It’s her family who she abandoned for celebrities like you'
'Good Morning Britain' host Piers Morgan has slammed George Clooney's claims that the Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle, is being "pursued, vilified and chased" like Princess Diana by the media.
Morgan called out Clooney's comments in his column for the Daily Mail where he wrote, "The problem here isn’t the media, which has largely given Meghan a very positive ride."
He also spoke about allegedly being "ghosted" by the Duchess, who he says "knew exactly what she was doing" when she decided to tie the knot to Prince Harry.
"When she met Harry, Meghan wasn’t some naïve young 19-year-old virgin like Diana. She was a 35-year-old divorcee with a successful acting career who knew exactly what she was doing," Morgan wrote. "She has milked all the global fame and attention that’s subsequently come her way with obvious glee," he continued.
Clooney, who is a good friend of the Duchess, had said that the media is "just chasing Meghan Markle everywhere."
"She's a woman who is seven months pregnant and she is being pursued and vilified and chased in the same way that Diana was, and it's history repeating itself. And we've seen how that ends. I can't tell you how frustrating it is to see that," Clooney shared with Australian magazine WHO.
Morgan rebutted this, saying, "But there is absolutely no comparison between the amount of media attention she gets and the amount Diana experienced. Diana was the biggest star on the planet; Meghan isn’t even in the top three biggest stars currently living at Kensington Palace. And Clooney is not just wrong about that. He’s also wrong to blame the media for negative headlines driven largely by Meghan’s own family."
"He [Clooney] is wrong to blame the media for negative headlines driven largely by Meghan’s own family. They are the ones vilifying her because she has disowned them all, and they understandably feel hurt about that. The problem is Meghan’s incredibly toxic relationship with her family that shows no sign of abating and in fact, gets worse by the day," Morgan added.
In his column, Morgan also shared, "There is a certain irony in Clooney saying all this just days after Meghan directed five of her best friends to speak to People magazine and knife her poor father in the back."
According to PEOPLE, five of Markle's friends, whose identities have not been revealed, shared that the Duchess had written a letter to her estranged father Thomas Markle shortly after getting married to Prince Harry in May last year.
In the letter, she wrote, "I have one father. Please stop victimizing me through the media."
The five friends who are believed to be in Meghan's innermost circle revealed that Thomas responded to the letter by asking Meghan for a photo shoot.
"I think she will always feel genuinely devastated by what he has done," the sources shared. "Meg has silently sat back and endured the lies and untruths. We worry about what this is doing to her and the baby. It’s wrong to put anyone under this level of emotional trauma, let alone when they’re pregnant," her pals added.
