Pickleball, that 911 call and EMS 9: The tragic final hours of FRIENDS icon Matthew Perry's life
CALIFORNIA, LOS ANGELES: Hollywood has lost one of its most beloved actors with the sudden and shocking death of Matthew Perry on October 28, 2023.
There continues to be much confusion and speculation about what may have caused the demise of the 'Friends' star.
Nonetheless, some details from the star's final hours are giving investigators more clarity on his demise. Perry's death might not have been a straightforward case of drowning in his jacuzzi tub.
Perry's history of substance abuse may be important to investigate deeper into the reasons behind his death since the police are now thinking that the actor may have slipped back into his past habits.
Matthew Perry was 'fatigued' after his regular pickleball game
One of the things Perry did in his last hours before death was go for a game of pickleball which was part of his everyday activities. According to Daily Mail, he used to play twice a day but on that day, he could only last an hour before he gave up to go home.
Pickleball was part of his quest to become absolutely healthy after succumbing to concerning health issues in the past few years.
The actor struggled with substance abuse from a very young age and it only got progressively worse until he went through rehab and lived through an extended period of sobriety.
As per Daily Mail, TV host Billy Bush spoke to Perry's fellow pickleball player who reported that the actor had been "fatigued today and over the past week. A little more than usual."
911 call reveals the suspected cause of Matthew Perry's death
Perry was later found unresponsive in his jacuzzi tub after his pickleball game. The person who found him was his assistant who was asked to buy him a new iPhone and prescription glasses. On reaching his LA pad, the assistant saw the scene and called emergency services along with Perry's mother and sibling, as per Daily Mail.
The assistant found the actor unresponsive when he arrived at Perry's Los Angeles apartment and, along with Perry's mother and sister, summoned emergency services, Daily Mail reports.
According to The Sun, the call between the first responder and the assistant revealed that the case was reported as EMS 9 or Emergency Medical Situation 9 which is used to refer to a case of drowning.
The police have not suspected foul play yet and they might have to rely on more autopsy reports which would provide insight into whether his substance abuse past had anything to do with this.
Are drugs involved in Matthew Perry's death?
Drug addiction has not been put off from the table as one of the causes of Perry's sudden death.
The actor had a serious addiction problem with prescription painkillers that he got on after a major injury during his film shoot for 'Fools Rush In'.
He continued to grapple with the addiction through most of the 10 seasons of 'Friends'.
Later, in 2018, Perry had a close touch with death when he went into a coma because of a perforated bowel and had barely any chance of survival.
While the police did not find any drugs on the scene, his LA house Pacific Palisades neighborhood had stocks of anti-depressants, anti-anxiety drugs, and drugs for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, as per The Sun.
