Spoilers for 'Penny Dreadful: City of Angels' Season 1 Episode 5 'Children of the Royal Sun'

Los Angeles may be the City of Angels, but it's also filled with more liars than you can shake a stick at. You come to expect that nearly everyone on the show is hiding something important but when the head of a religious organization like Molly Finnister (Kerry Bishe) shares two wildly different versions of a very personal story, it would surprise anybody.

On the latest episode of 'Penny Dreadful: City of Angels,' Molly shares a story from her childhood with Tiago Vega (Daniel Zovatto) while the two are alone together, in bed. The story illustrates just how much her mother has always come through for Molly, in tough times. However, she later shares the same story with Josefina Vega (Jessica Garza) and this time details of the story changed in significant ways; this time, in the same circumstances, Molly was abandoned by her mother to the mercies of a group of pedophiles.

Some fans believe that Molly held back the more unsavory parts of the truth to keep Tiago from worrying. "She held back this part of the story from Tiago. Molly made it seem like those men were a godsend instead of a nightmare," writes a fan on Twitter. A viewer on Reddit posts, "She was clearly lying to Tiago but I think she was telling the truth to Josefina. She was shaking a bit and the painful expression on her face seemed genuine when she was talking to her. (Lol or maybe I'm the type of person who someone like Molly would easily pray on if she was real)"

Many other fans are wondering which version of the story is true or if any version is trustworthy at all. "Molly could be like Magda and fitting in to whoever she is around to further something for herself," writes one fan, on Twitter. "In the new ep Molly tells two very different versions of an incident from her past to two different people. Which version is true? Or is either one of them true? Trusting Molly less and less as the series goes on, but #KerryBishe is sure killing it!" writes another.

Most fans believe that this proves just how little Molly can be trusted. "Very convincing, Sister Molly. And this is why I can’t trust her. She’s quite the bull***tter," writes a fan. A fan on Reddit writes, "Way I see it is us viewers were shown Molly lying through her teeth to both Tiago and Josefina, to her own benefit and for the same benefit: to get them to trust her more. Because she's clearly a cult leader," adding, "And maybe I'm reading too much into it but she comes across as very cult leadery to me, charismatic, manipulative and deceitful."

This fan summarizes the feelings of most of the fans online, writing, "I still have trouble fully trusting Molly cuz she's not very honest."

Jessica Garza posted some behind-the-scenes facts about that moment between Molly and Josefina - "Fun #PennyDreadful #CityofAngels Fact: My scene tonight with Sister Molly was one of my audition scenes. I’ve known that scene since January of 2019!"

The next episode of 'Penny Dreadful: City of Angels' airs May 31, on Showtime.
