'Penny Dreadful: City of Angels' Episode 6 Preview: Magda and Maria face off in the fight for Mateo's soul
After that terrible cliffhanger in episode 5 last week, get set to see how Mateo Vega's (Johnathan Nieves) violent decision to murder the cop who assaulted Josefina Vega (Jessica Garza) plays out. In the trailer for the upcoming episode 6, we see him holed up with Natalie Dormer's Magda disguised as Rio. When Maria Vega (Adriana Barraza) shows up at their hiding spot, she faces off with Magda herself who bars her way, telling Maria that she is "not welcome".
But Maria is made of sterner stuff than the kind of people Magda usually intimidates and manipulates. She stands her ground and tells her "you better step aside". She will also plead with Mateo to come home and turn himself over -- but her advice may fall on deaf ears.
In the meantime, Tiago (Daniel Zovatto) and Lewis Michener (Nathan Lane) interrogate Diego (Adan Rocha), seeking a confession, while Lewis senses Tiago is hiding something from him. He asks Tiago in the trailer how many times he has stuck his neck out for him. By hiding things from Lewis, Tiago might actually be making things worse for Mateo since Lewis is the only one on his side in the entire police force and he is going to need some back-up for when things go further south.
Tiago asks that he be allowed to interrogate Diego alone and is asked a crucial question: "Are you a cop pretending to be a Mexican or a Mexican pretending to be a cop?" His divided loyalties are like a razor's edge Tiago walks on every day and hearing this from a suspect he is interrogating, will only make this crisis of identity even more acute. We do see him losing it and fighting with fellow cops and even drawing his gun. So suffice to say our boy is not in the best of shape, mentally.
There will also be consequences for Tiago and Molly's sexual tryst. Miss Adelaide (Amy Madigan) will warn Molly (Kerry Bishe) about her personal desires jeopardizing the Temple's future. How long before she takes action to make sure Molly stays committed to the Church, keeping her public image as the pure "Sister Molly" unsullied. Josefina, however, seems to have no doubts regarding Molly as she turns up at another gathering to hear her speak, as the trailer shows.
Townsend (Michael Gladis) will take a rare day off in the company of Magda-approved boy toy Kurt (Dominic Sherwood). We see him waxing eloquent about LA's transformative power where people don't have to worry about who they were when they arrive -- only who or what they become. This philosophizing will probably come after Kurt reveals details about his surprising past before he began working for the Nazis.
Peter Craft (Rory Kinnear) will also make a dramatic decision about his marriage with Linda (Piper Perabo). After all, how can one continue as a placid family man after having helped a lover dispose of a dead body and seal their dark coupling on the edge of his grave?
'Penny Dreadful: City of Angels' airs at 10/9c on SHOWTIME on Sundays.
