‘Daredevil: Born Again’ showrunner opens up on future of Kingpin: 'It's all part...'
There's no doubt about the fact that Vincent D'Onofrio's Wilson Fisk, also known by his street name of Kingpin, remains one of the most formidable foes on the Disney+ show 'Daredevil: Born Again.' Ever since he became the mayor of the city by the conclusion of the show's debut season, his fortune has seemingly been on the rise. Fisk not only poses a mortal threat to Charlie Cox's Matt Murdock, but is also poised to wipe out the breed of vigilantes from the city in a sweeping move, with the help of his dreaded Anti-Vigilante Task Force. However, a snippet from the upcoming 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day' trailer had previously sparked intense speculation about Fisk's ultimate fate, even suggesting he might die by the end of Season 2, and showrunner Dario Scardapane opened up about the same.
Plenty of speculation has arisen because in the trailer for the upcoming MCU movie, Spider-Man is handed the keys to the city by Sheila Rivera, who happens to be Fisk's political advisor and assistant. It is worth noting that Fisk is absent at the moment in question. Nevertheless, showrunner Dario Scardapane had something different to say in terms of Fisk's character arc this season. Speaking in a recent interview with The New York Times, Scardapane noted, "Every time I say something, there are repercussions. So, Parts One and Two of this current story, where Fisk becomes mayor, and Matt leads the resistance, bring that dynamic to an inevitable point."
Scardapane further revealed that the Season 2 wouldn't mark the end of D'Onofrio's character, "There are a few comic book runs that are part of the lore, and we take bits and pieces of those, mash them up, and use them as inspiration, it’s all part of the larger story of Matt Murdock’s struggle with being someone who has such respect for the law and yet breaks it on a regular basis." Furthermore, Season 3 of 'Daredevil: Born Again' has already been greenlit by Disney+ and is currently in production. Speaking about a change in Fisk's state of affairs in the upcoming instalment of the show, Cox remarked, "(It) feels like (the show has) shed the skin of the Mayor Fisk era [and is] a new book, a new dawn, a little bit. It's still a continuation, obviously, but it's slightly different."
Scardapane further shed light on the inter-connected nature of the first two seasons, suggesting that Season 3 won't be any different: "Season 1 and Season 2 are Part One and Part Two. It feels that way. I think there's also a Part Three to that story, but I need to be very quiet about that. The ballad of Fisk and Murdock has, in my mind, an ebb and flow. We talked earlier about how in Season 2, Fisk is fully Kingpin and Murdock is fully Daredevil, and there’s a consequence to that—and that’s where we’re heading next."
