DUXBURY, MASSACHUSETTS: A GoFundMe created for Lindsay Clancy’s husband, Patrick Clancy, has raised a whopping $1,072,220 exceeding its $1,000,000 goal as of Tuesday, March 7. Nearly two months after the “unimaginable tragedy", the Duxbury mother is still reportedly recovering from her injuries in the hospital as the courts decide her charges in the crime. Lindsay's husband, Patrick, divided public opinion when he stated that his wife was loving and that he forgives her for taking the lives of his little children.

In fact, the use of the GoFundMe donations, which was set up to help Patrick has generated a lot of debate with the public asking whether it would be put to use for Lindsay's defense or would help the distraught father move on. Lindsay, the 32-year-old Massachusetts mother allegedly strangled her three children, five-year-old Cora, three-year-old Dawson, and seven-month-old Callan before attempting to take her own life on January 24. She currently faces two counts of first-degree murder, three counts of strangulation and suffocation, and three counts of assault with a deadly weapon. However, her defense team has entered an insanity plea, citing mental health issues that allegedly culminated and wreaked her postnatal mind.

'The real Lindsay was loving': Patrick Clancy says he forgives wife Lindsay for killing their children

The controversy surrounding the GoFundMe for Patrick Clancy

Mathew Glaser, who described himself as part of the couple's "extended family," started the fundraiser campaign on Patrick's behalf, citing, "This GoFundMe is intended to help Pat pay for medical bills, funeral services, and legal help. This assistance is especially needed because Pat will be unable to work for the foreseeable future as he weathers this painful, life-altering tragedy." In a statement, Patrick thanked donors for their "love and support" adding, "the warmth I’ve received from the community is palpable and your generosity gives me hope that I can focus on some sort of healing."

Furthermore, Patrick asked people to find it in their hearts to forgive Lindsay as he himself had. He wrote, "I want to ask all of you that you find it deep within yourselves to forgive Lindsay, as I have. The real Lindsay was generously loving and caring towards everyone - me, our kids, family, friends, and her patients. The very fibers of her soul are loving. All I wish for her now is that she can somehow find peace."

Once the fundraiser gathered steam, the public was divided, questioning whether the campaign meant to cover the funeral expenses for Clancy’s children or foot her growing legal bills as she recovers in hospital from her injuries. An attorney for Lindsay clarified that the funds “have nothing to do with” his client’s legal defense as the mother appeared in court from a hospital bed for her arraignment initially, as per Law&Crime.

Public sentiment for Lindsay Clancy

The Duxbury deaths have brought to the fore an important issue in terms of mental health. Since Lindsay's arrest, many mothers and medical professionals have rallied to call for a better understanding of postpartum depression and psychosis. Unsealed in court, last month, were dozens of letters sent in favor of Lindsay, explaining why they believe the mom was a victim of poor medical care and mental illness.

In fact, the posts from donors on the GoFundMe page show plenty of people who sent in their support, with one writing, "The hearts of parents around the world are breaking right along with you. As you know too well, the struggles of postpartum are all too real. Sending you prayers and our deepest condolences as you and Lindsay look to heal from this unimaginable tragedy." Another well-wisher wrote, “As a family who has experienced postpartum psychosis, our hearts go out to you and Lindsay. Our thoughts and prayers are with you both as you navigate this impossible sorrow.”
