WELCOME TO GOAT LAND: Tom Brady's 'retirement sand' auctioned for $100K on eBay
MIAMI, FLORIDA: Tom Brady announced his second retirement on Wednesday, February 1, ending his career with seven Super Bowl victories amongst other NFL records. The 45-year-old Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback announced the news via a pre-recorded video allegedly filmed on a South Florida public beach.
Sports fans are known to pay a pretty penny for a wide range of memorabilia, from game-worn jerseys to other personal items that are borderline weird. On Saturday, February 4, bids for a bottle of sand, allegedly from the same spot where Brady announced his retirement, went as high as $100,000. Other copycats soon followed on eBay, listing sand-filled bottles in front of the same background Brady was seated in front of.

TikToker Betr Carol is selling Tom Brady's sand on eBay
A TikTok user named Betr Carol built the market for Brady's sand in an effort to make up for recent gambling losses, as per Daily Mail. "I was a Tom Brady fan for a really long time and I'm actually sitting exactly where he retired this morning," Carol said in the self-shot video, adding, "You can see the buildings, they're the exact same." At that point, Carol reveals a bag of sand. "Every dollar I lost from betting on you this season, I will be making back because I'm going to sell the sand you sat on as you retired. So, thank you, Tom Brady," Carol added.

'You will be owning the very land the GOAT retired on'
Carol posted a picture of her jar of sand next to Brady's retirement video backdrop on eBay to help establish the legitimacy of the item. She also provided a copy of The New York Times from February 1 to demonstrate the timeline of the pictures. "You will find no other listing like this, no one else took a sample on Feb 1st after the GOAT posted his real retirement," the listing said, adding, "You will be owning the very land the GOAT retired on." The price of the piece of memorabilia is still rising, and another week of bidding is anticipated.
In 2022, Brady announced about his retirement, citing a desire to spend more time with loved ones and an inability to give football his all. However, in just a month, he had a change of heart and returned to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
In his retirement video, Brady said, "Good morning guys. I'll get to the point right away. I'm retiring, for good. I know the process was a pretty big deal last time so when I woke up this morning I figured I'd just press record and let you guys know first. It won't be long-winded. You only get one super emotional retirement essay and I used mine up last year, so... really, thank you guys so much to every single one of you for supporting me. My family, my friends, my teammates, my competitors. I could go over forever, there's too many. Thank you guys for allowing me to live my absolute dream. I wouldn't change a thing. Love you all."
