Media mogul Oprah Winfrey's mother has died at the age of 83. Vernita Lee's death was first revealed on Facebook by Oprah's niece Alisha Hayes, and was later confirmed by Winfrey's representatives.

Hayes, on Facebook, wrote: "My grandmother, Rest In Peace," and shared the pictures of the two together. Vernita was at her Wisconsin home when she died.

"I lost my beautiful grandma on Thanksgiving. She was the number one supporter of Pat’s [Alisha's restaurant] and was the person who named our restaurant. We will miss her and will carry on her legacy of good eatin! We love you Vernita Lee!" Hayes added in her post.

According to an official obituary, Vernita died at her home in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and a private funeral was reportedly held for her. The family representatives even asked all the donations to be given to the charity Feeding America.

Vernita is survived by her daughters Oprah, Patricia Amanda Faye Lee; grandchildren Alisha Hayes, Chrishaunda Lee Perez, Aquarius Lofton and Andre Brown and great-grandchildren Jaxon Praise Perez, Chai Theresa Perez, Donovan Hayes and Trinity Hayes. The 83-year-old was reportedly predeceased by her son Jeffrey Lee and daughter Patricia Lee Lloyd.

Reports state that Vernita, when she was still a teenager, gave birth to Oprah with Vernon Winfrey and left her to be raised by her own mother, Hattie Mae Lee, in Mississippi, while she worked as a housemaid, away from home in Milwaukee.

Oprah, 64, was six-years-old when she first went to live with her mother and was raped and abused by family friends. The people in question have not yet been publicly identified.

The media mogul moved to Nashville at the aged of 14 to live with her father permanently in 1968 and was reportedly pregnant at the time. She eventually gave birth to a son, who died when he was just a week old, according to reports.
